Chapter 2: L'anello

I was there sitting, wondering how in the world I could do this without getting caught. I can't do this by myself. I'll need someone, naive and dumb enough to help me. Lorenzo is perfect to get the info from but he doesn't look stupid. Honestly, I don't even know what I need to look for. Dunn said it was something about an information that can make him take over the company.
- Katherine.
- Hum
- Katherine?
- Yes, oh sorry Matteo.
- I haven't had the time to introduce myself properly.
- No need to. I already know who you are.
- Excuse me?
- I mean, you're Matteo Giordano the manager of the biggest company in Europe. How can I not know who you are.
- Of course. I need you to check so documents in my office. I would ask Alejandro but he's busy and so is Silvia.
I nodded. Matteo wanted me to go to his office for a document check. Why me? The new girl. I mean, there's obliviously more experience workers. I guess I'll just have to play dumb and act like I don't know who he's talking about. "Gabriella?" I keep overhearing it in my head.

*Matteo's view point*

I was supposed to meet this new employe at 9 with Alejandro and Lorenzo. Lorenzo had told me that the resume was impressive, and I agreed. I headed to the meeting when my heart exploded. Panic, was my reaction. That isn't Miss Miler. That's Gabriella. My first love. The only person I actually loved. But she left without saying anything. We had plans, dreams for the future. She came back, but why does she call herself Katherine? When everyone left the conference room, I went to my office and just couldn't stop thinking about her.
- Fratello!
- Lorenzo, something wrong?
- The only thing wrong here is you're face. Who died? Hahaha
- Nothing. I mean, you remember the girl I told you about?
- Which one? He laughed
- Gabriella.
- Oh, Gabriella. You're long lost love. I though you would have forgotten about that. Aren't you engaged?
- I know I know, but I think she came back.
- Look Matteo, it's been 4 years already..
- Five years.
- I remember when we first meet, you were obsessed with her. You couldn't forget about her, and then you got engaged to Melissa.
- Ugh, I don't know what to do. Should I see if it's really her or no?
- I mean, I think you should go after Gabriella, clearly you haven't forgotten about her. Where did you see her?
I didn't want to tell him. I needed to make sure it was her first. I couldn't risk losing Melissa without knowing if it was truly her.
- Hum, at the coffee shop this morning. Thanks Lorenzo, you can take you're lunch break now.
- It's 10:45 but fine I won't decline a free break.
I walk fast downstairs to go and see her. I couldn't lose the change to find her again I just couldn't.

**Gabriella/Katherine's view point**

He was there, looking at me. We were face to face. We didn't say anything for a good 5 minutes. He was staring at me and then looking on the floor. Again and Again. For some reason, I felt guilty. Really guilty.
- Miss Miler, here are the documents.
I couldn't say anything I didn't even open them. I just looked at his hands over and over again. He was wearing a ring, not any kind of ring. A ring that looks like an engagement ring. My heart melted. He saw that I was looking and he quickly removed his hand from the desk. I got up and took the documents ready to leave when he said:
- Miss Miler. I didn't introduce myself properly earlier. I wanted to tell you welcome, and if you have any questions please ask me.
I was about to turn around when he gave me his hand to shake it. I wasn't sure wether I should give him an handshake or not. I couldn't risk him seeing it but if I refused his handshake he would have gotten suspicious.

**Matteo's view point**

I asked her if she could come in my office to scan some finance documents for the company. She came in my office and she looked surprised that I had asked her. I didn't know a way how to see if it was really her. I couldn't stop starring at her, every time I looked at her I had old memories come thru my head. We had planned a future, made promises that we would end up together, and then she just left.

**Flashback 5 years ago**

- I love you.
- I love you too, Gaby.
- I can't wait for my 18 birthday. We're going to get married, I'll be a successful business women and you'll be an amazing lawyer.
Matteo smiled.
- I wanted to give you something.
- What is it?
- It's a ring, a promise ring. In one year everything will be different. Our life's are going to change for the better, and with you by my side. Nothing could ever go wrong.
Matteo looked at the beautiful brunette and her gorgeous ocean eyes and they kissed until the sunset disappeared...

**End of flashback**

The ring! I thought, maybe she still as the ring. If she really did love me, she would have had it. I wasn't sure since 5 years is a long time. But she I needed to try. I put my hand towards her to give her an handshake. She looked at it for a couple of seconds as if she was hesitating whether or not to do It. She ended up giving me an handshake a really quick one and I saw it. I saw the ring. I knew that it was her, and she still as it. Even after all those years...
