1943

Chapter One

"Hey! Pick on someone your own size!" Bucky yelled, running into the alleyway. He pushed the angry guy away and he scampered out of the alleyway.

"Sometimes I think you like getting punched." Hailey laughed, helping Steve off the ground.

"I had him on the ropes," Steve exclaimed. Hailey reached down to pick up Steve's most recent enlistment form.

"How many times is this?" She asked, handing Bucky the form. Bucky read it over before looking down at Steve.

"Oh, you're from Paramus now? You know it's illegal to lie on an enlistment form. And seriously, Jersey?" Bucky laughed slightly. Steve ignored what he was saying.

"You get your orders?" He asked. Bucky nodded.

"The one-o-seventh. Sergeant James Barnes. Shipping out for England first thing tomorrow." Bucky said.

"How about you?" Steve asked, looking at Hailey.

"Agent Hailey Barnes. By noon tomorrow, I'll be in Jersey. A few weeks from then I'll be in England."

"I should be going." Steve sighed.

"Come on man! Our last night! Gotta get you cleaned up!" Bucky smiled, wrapping an arm around Steve. Hailey stood on the other side of Steve and walked next to them.

"Why? Where are we going?" Steve asked.

"The future!" Hailey exclaimed as Bucky handed him a flyer. The three friends walked out of the ally and into the future.

"I don't see what the problem is. You're about to be the last eligible man in New York. You know, there's three and a half million women here." Bucky said. They were walking towards the Exposition of Tomorrow.

"Well, I'd just settle for one." Steve sighed.

"Good thing we took care of that." Hailey smiled, waving to two girls.

"What did you tell her about me?" Steve asked.

"Only the good stuff." Hailey smiled.

"Hailey I thought you were getting someone for yourself." Bucky laughed.

"Decided against it. I'm leaving tomorrow and don't want to involve myself." Hailey smiled at her brother.

"Come on. You're kind of missing the point of a double date." Bucky said. Steve had left the group to go to the recruitment center.

"You go ahead. I'll catch up." Steve sighed.

"You're really doing this again?" Hailey asked.

"Well, it's a fair. I'm gonna try my luck."

"As who? Steve from Ohio? They'll catch you. Or worse, they'll actually take you." Bucky sighed.

"Look, I know you both don't think I can do this." Steve hung his head.

"This isn't a back alley, Steve. It's a war!" Hailey exclaimed.

"I know it's a war. You don't have to tell me." Hailey and Bucky could tell Steve was getting frustrated.

"Why are you so keen to fight? There are so many important jobs." Bucky said.

"What am I gonna do? Collect scrap metal-" Steve started.

"Yes!" Bucky interrupted.

"-In my little red wagon." Steve finished.

"Why not?" Bucky laughed slightly.

"I'm not gonna sit in a factory, Bucky." Steve sighed.

"I don't-"

"Bucky, come on! There are men laying down their lives. I got no right to do any less than them. That's what you don't understand. This isn't about me." Steve exclaimed.

"Right. Cause you got nothing to prove." Hailey said, finally talking after being quiet for a while.

"Hey, Sarge! Are we going dancing?" Bucky's date called to them. Bucky turned to them before calling back.

"Yes, we are," Bucky said, turning back to Steve. "Don't do anything stupid until I get back."

"How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you."

"You're a punk." Bucky laughed, playfully punching him in the shoulder. He and Steve hugged.

"Jerk. Be careful." Steve smiled. Bucky smiled back at him.

"I'll see you when I get back." He said, turning to the girls. "Come on girls. They're playing our song." He wrapped an arm around each of the girls and they walked away.

"You should go too," Steve said, turning to Hailey.

"No. I'll stay with you for now. I'll meet Bucky later and we'll say our goodbyes then."

"If you say so." Steve sighed, filling out his form.

"Hailey! Hailey!" Steve called, practically sprinting around to find her.

"Yes?" She exclaimed, running towards him. He thrust a file at her. "Oh, Steve! You got accepted!" She beamed. Steve looked proud.

"I'll be in Jersey with you in a few days! Then I'll hopefully get to go to London!"

"Gosh, Steve that's amazing!" She smiled, hugging his fragile figure. "Oh, look at the time! I really got to meet Buck. He'd stay out all night if he could." Hailey laughed.

"I miss you both already."

"And I haven't even walked away from you yet." She smiled, a little tear running down the side of her face."I'll see you in a few days!" She exclaimed.

"Don't win the war till I get there!"

"Yes, sir!" Hailey laughed, saluting him.

- New Jersey -

"Peggy!" Hailey exclaimed, seeing her close friend and running towards her.

"Hailey!" Peggy Carter exclaimed.

"How are things? I haven't seen you in ages!" Peggy smiled. It had only been a few months, but they missed each other dearly.

"Good! Even better now that I'm here." Hailey smiled. "You?" She asked.

"Fantastic! I've been here for about a week already. It's incredibly different than my last base."

(QUICK A/N!!
So in this story, Bucky, Steve, and Peggy are around 22-23 years old and Hailey is around 19. Peggy trained Hailey at S.H.I.E.L.D. to become an Agent and they became really close even though there's an age gap. SO YEAH. Thanks for reading <3)

"Oh! I completely forgot! Buck got in, and Steve got in too!" Hailey beamed.
"Who's Steve?" Peggy asked.

"He's like an older brother to me." She went into the pocket of her uniform and pulled out a beaten photo and showed it to Peggy. "That's him on the left." She said, pointing to him. "He's a little... Fragile."

"I can see that." Peggy smiled slightly.

"He's so sold on proving himself even though he's got nothing to prove." Hailey laughed, shrugging.

"I think he'll do just fine." Peggy smiled, giving Hailey a one-armed hug.

WOW. chapter one is done.
also, i saw infinity war last night (april 25, 2018) which is two days before it came out in the US (which is where I am lol i got to go to an early screening.)
IT WAS AMAZING. I CRIED SO HARD.
anyway.
by the time i publish this chapter infinity war will be out for a while because i'm going to upload this once i get to chapter 17 in new recruits lol.
