In stories you read, the first chapter tends to talk mostly about how the characters life was normal and how all of the sudden his or her world was suddenly flipped. As you go on the character will go in insane adventures, meet other characters along the way, or fall in love with another character. Then, once you start nearing the end, things will perk up for this "heroic" protagonist, leaving you happy and on your merry way. But in the end, when all is said and done, did you really learn something? Or was it another cliché book on the rack?
