The world was meant to be a great place. The world was a great place. Then the monkeys/apes evolved into us. Or however you think the world was created. Either religiously or scientifically. Basically, the world was better without humans. Because as soon as humans were born, we were fighting and killing everything. Some went off to live happy lives filled with feelings and hope. Others the opposite. Sometimes I think that there was a third group, the emotionless ones. They do not care or think about anything. Back to the point, if humans eradicated themselves, then would life be better? Well, we would not have the choice anyway. Our lives would be taken from us.
I woke up Tuesday morning with my phone beeping out of control. It was Jeremiah.
The texts were filled with worry as he continued to question what was happening. The texts had started yesterday. The latest one said he was going to figure out where I live. This was half an hour ago.
I decided to ignore it, he seemed to have given up. I took a quick shower and did the rest of my routine. I dressed in a cropped grey fuzzy sweater paired with a white skirt. Adding a long cream colored sweater and my fedora, I grabbed a book. I have work in the afternoon today.
Sitting on the couch, I began to read. Less than five minutes later, I forced myself to check who was knocking on the door.
Guess who it was.
Jeremiah Attricove.
I did not see him clearly at first though. I had opened the door with closed eyes and said, "Tyler and Tarek. How many times do I have to tell you? Monday's aren-"
"Tyler and Tarek aren't home right now. My name is Jeremiah, I can take a message if you want."
My eyes were open in an instant and I looked ahead of me. Said male leaned against the doorframe lazily with a crooked smile. I pulled him through the door quickly and looked down the hall both ways. I closed the door after I pulled my head back in. Jeremiah was muttering things underneath his breath about being manhandled.
The paparazzi, I guess you could call them, are getting closer. The other day I went out to go grocery shopping, when the elevator doors opened there were several people there looking for answers. I did not want Jeremiah getting involved with that, simply because he does not even know who I am. Tyler and Tarek have proved several times that they aren't capable of forming coherent answers to their questions.
"Earth to Melyssa," Jeremiah said, "Is Melyssa here today?"
"Uh I-I," I stuttered, "Yes. I am here. Did you happen see anyone in the lobby?"
He looked surprised, "You're not going to ask how I got your address or anything?"
"Could you please just answer the question that I had asked you," I raised my voice slightly.
Confusion seeped in slightly and could see it in Jeremiah's face. "Okay," he started, "Jesus Christ. I saw a few people down there sitting by the elevator. They asked me who I was going to see and I told them to fuck off."
His tone was one that was a mix of disgust and concern almost. "I am sorry I-I shouldn't have yelled. I have just been under a litt- You know what, never mind. Do you want coffee or tea?"
He took a few slow steps forward so that he was a few inches in front of me. "Melyssa?"
"Yes," I replied. I heard the concern in his voice practically flooding out every other emotion. It caused my own tone to turn quiet.
"Are you okay? You didn't answer me yesterday, or last night, or this morning. That's the only reason I came here. I thought something happened," he said but then paused. "Did something happen?"
"U-um I-I- how about we talk about it over coffee," I suggested and he nodded.
Moving to the side to try and get past Jeremiah, he stopped me by holding my shoulder gently. When I turned to face him, I was greeted by a warm hug. I was utterly surprised by two things.
One being the fact that Jeremiah was hugging me. An extremely attractive male was hugging me. He was concerned about me. He has known me for a little over a week, and he feels the need to comfort me.
Two being that I was not minding him hugging me. Like I said before, I had known him for a little over a week. The way I met him was over text. He has also randomly showed up at my house five minutes ago. And I did not mind any of it. My life is slowly turning into a book that you could take off a shelf and read whenever you wanted a sad rom-com.
I hesitantly wrapped my arms around Jeremiah as well. In response, he squeezed me a little tighter and said, "I like my coffee with a little milk and a bunch of sugar."
Pulling away from the hug, I rolled my eyes and listened as he laughed. I walked away into the kitchen and told him to sit anywhere he wanted in the living room.
I put some coffee grounds into the coffee machine and some water and whatever else. I waited a few minutes for the two cups of coffee to fill. I added a small amount of milk and a bunch of sugar to one and left the other black.
Walking back into the living room, I didn't see Jeremiah. I put the two cups of coffee on the table and started to look around. He was standing behind the couch holding a frame. In his other hand he was holding a medal.
"What are you looki-"
"Who the fuck are you," he cut me off. He continued to look at the frame.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean," he started and shoved the frame into my hands, "Who the fuck are you."
The picture was taken a little under a month ago. I was wearing a nice dress that represented class and intelligence. I wore a medal around my neck and had my arms around both Tyler and Tarek.
This was the photo that was taken at the ceremony that pronounced me the S. W. I. T. W. The written words on the frame read, 'Rogue Blair, the Smartest Woman in the World. Has A Nice Ring To It -Tarek and Tyler'
I took the frame in my hands and looked up to Jeremiah slowly. "I'm going ask the same question differently this time. Who the fuck is Rogue Blair? Why do you look exactly like her? And have you been lying to me this entire time?"
I blinked for a few seconds, "I-I-"
