As she stood in front of the diner, cigarette in hand, other hand in her jean pocket, fiddling with the little piece of numbered napkin that John gave her; Rayna felt that old familiar pang of loneliness. She always felt this way, even when surrounded by crowds of people. It wouldn't go away, and made her quite frustrated at times. She chalked it up to not having a steady relationship, but also erased that from her mind. Given she never really was the traditional type, or the simple kind anyway. The guys she had been with always had a hard time keeping track of her.
Her train of thought stopped when she realized she had to appear at an art gallery show soon.
"Shit," she spoke to herself before ashing off her cigarette one more time.
She couldn't lie to herself, she was anxious for this one. One of her pieces were being displayed and she couldn't imagine how people would react to it. It was a simple sketch of anatomy, but she deemed it fit to be displayed. And to have it accepted was simply daunting to her. She reminded herself how far she has come from the past, in fact she developed some pretty thick skin from being around so many other artists. Let alone New York artists. That's not even mentioning the socialites, scene queens, writers, poets, etc. She worked for every single opportunity she had gotten, and that she never got anything easy. She took a breath and called out for a cab back home.
Once home, she changed into a Giorgio Armani black and white silk evening dress. It was form fitting with a v-neckline.
She felt alright as she peered at herself in the mirror, along with simple black pumps that were comfortable. She decided on some mascara, lipgloss and a bit of blush. A bit of powder beneath her eyes, and she felt set.
"What do you think, Billie?" She asked her purring cat near her feet.
"Glad you think so" She said smoothing the dress out between her fingers.
Before heading out the door her phone rang,
James.
"Where are you at? It's starting in ten minutes!" He practically yelled into the receiver.
"Ten minutes? Okay, I'll be there soon," She said as she peered at her clock.
"Were you hanging out with that rugged Romeo in the diner?" James pressed with a hint of know-it-all in his voice.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," She brushed it off, a bit surprised that James even noticed anything.
"I need all of the info after, I notice everything, Rayna Banana" He laughed with Seth in the background.
"Okay, okay, I'll be there, goodbye, James" She hung up the phone and took one last look in the mirror, and bid farewell to Billie as she peered out of the window waiting to look at Rayna walk outside, surely.
Once outside, sure enough there was Billie peering outside the window. She deemed it good luck before once again calling out for a taxi.
