"Jane, slow down!"
"Oh, come on, James! It's just rain!" I replied.
"There is lightning and a tornado warning is out! Let's just go back in the house!"
"Nope! You're it and you have to tag me!" I ran off into another direction, getting further and further away from James.
If it was even possible, the thunder and lightning intensified, but being an eight year old that thought she could handle anything and that nothing would harm her, I kept running.
After a couple of minutes of running through the streets, drenched and chilled to the bone, I turned to see how close James was to me. He wasn't even in sight. The wind was beginning to pick up and my wet hair was flying around me as I ran through the streets in a panic trying to find my way home.
I began to lose hope and sob as I looked around at the unrecognizable houses and the thunder boomed around me. Then, a bolt of lightning came closer to me than the rest.
It stopped only a few inches from the heel of my foot and tore through the asphalt, making an immense hole that smoked around the edges. I inched my way toward it with wide eyes, scared out of my mind.
And that was the day that changed my life.
