The streets of Tokyo are placid at the time that Kina Mikatsu is heading home from after-school study. The rapping of rain drops against her raven umbrella along with the occasional vehicle passing by are the only noises heard. At this time, Mikatsu is pensive and dreary, but accepting of the fate that tomorrow will be an identical day. Her ebony hair is swept back carefully. Her uniform, average and standard as any other. Her shoes, loafers her Oba-san had purchased for her last year. She is lost in thought, as many fifteen year-olds tend to be and-
Sploosh.
Kina stares down, the rain still beating against her umbrella and surroundings. She had stepped in a puddle. Water drenches her leather loafers, and Kina feels her socks absorbing some too. Kina blankly assesses the trouble, shakes her foot to rid it of water, and leaps over the puddle. Sighing, the exhausted student cranks her neck back all the way, to face the deep, dark, night sky, weary of walking any further. In this sleepy gaze of the sky, the plain girl's eyes are momentarily dazzled by an arresting red parchment-- no, an envelope. In her jaded state, curiosity takes hold, and she chases the envelope, not minding the harsh rain and wind, nor her soaked toes. With difficulty, Kina catches the envelope. She examines what her great effort has brought her. It is lucky red, with simple black hiragana written on the front. The scrawling reads,
"あかいと、あかふうとう"
("Red Ribbon, Red Envelope")
Kina's eyes widen, and her right hand raises to her hair, and her fingers gently stroke the red ribbon that held the waterfall of black in place at the nape of her neck.
