Pretending to be someone I'm not is more difficult than answering a Math problem or memorizing the periodic table of elements.
And it's getting more obvious than before. I mean, my classmates are noticing the changes in me.
"Look at that hottie! He's so into me!" one of the girls in the popular table whispered to the girl next to her. I was able to hear her, thanks to this stupid ear. Yes, it's a big problem to me. Just imagine being able to hear everyone's crushes, their first kiss, the time and place of their dates, and even the color of panties they're wearing!
I looked towards the direction of the 'hottie'. Okay, he's cute. "Concentrate... Concentrate..." I told myself while gathering my strength to be able to enter his mind.
"Almost there... Concentrate..." I whispered.
Why can't I enter his mind?
"What the?! Yazz, I already told you I like that guy so can you please back off and stop looking at him eye to eye?" I heard someone say.
*Bam!*
I heard a big explosion in my mind. Sh!t, my energy has been drained!

I woke up and found myself in the clinic. I looked at the mirror.
"Surprise!" my reflection shouted.
"Shh Khloe, be quiet!" I mouthed. She heard me of course, being my soul twin and all. Only Fera royalties like me have soul twins. They show up either in shadow or reflection form whenever we are alone. They are the ones that guide us through our missions.
"Mission Number One has arrived!" she whispered cheerfully. She said that like it's a good thing. Missions are never good. Many Feras die even in their first mission. We get our first mission 150 days before we become fully grown. That's when we turn 18.
"What does it say?" I asked mournfully.
My reflection, named Khloe, got an envelope from her bag and read, "Yazz Khloe Jones. Dorm 22 Golden Eagle Academy. Second--"
"The letter, Khloe, not the envelope!" my energy has been drained and I was in a very bad mood.
"Oopsie. Sorry!" she opened the envelope, "December 21 marks the end of the human world, according to the Elder Book of Knowledge. And since Princess Alyazzette Jones, daughter of Queen Elizanna Jones, was created on the said date, she is to prepare to be the Fera Vir, or the hero, of the Fera race!" her voice raised excitedly, "Let her discover and unleash the secret of our race. Let her save us from the unimaginable death that is to happen to all of us. Let her be our savior."
She looked at me as if I was a ghost. "You're the one and only Fera that was assigned a first and last mission. It is the end!" she said dramatically.
"Oh shut up, Khloe," I told her. Wait, unimaginable death? "Please don't tell me that the unimaginable death part is really true," I added.
"Oh, I dunno know. I think I've heard about it. I guess it's in the Elder Book."
Hmm, the Elder Book. Where can I find the Elder Book?
"The Elder Book cannot be found
In a place without any sound
So if you need it, make a choice
Follow your heart or use your voice," Khloe recited. She must've read my mind.
"Have you ever tried calling for the Elder Book of Knowledge?" She asked me.
"Not yet. My Mom was always the one who summons it whenever we seek for knowledge," I told her.
"Yazz, you're talking to yourself? Are you taking drugs?" a familiar voice said. I looked towards the direction of the speaker.
"Nah, just practicing lines for Theatre Arts," I told her.
"You sure? What's the Elder Book of Knowledge?" Amber, my human best friend, asked me. She didn't know anything about me, except that I like being alone and I'm weird.
"Just an idea for the play," I told her. I was surprised because she came nearer and looked straight into my eyes.
"I thought your eyes were blue," she said, "Why are they brown right now?" Oh no! When we, Feras, receive our first mission, our eyes, complexion, and hair change.
"I'm wearing contacts. My eyesight is getting poor," I explained. I just hope she believed me.
"You're getting more pale than ever."
"Whitening lotion."
"Did you dye your hair here?"
I looked at my hair, "Washable dye."
"Wash it now. Blonde hair doesn't suit you."
"I'm getting tired of being a brunette."
"Do you like Ranz?"
"Well -- what?" I thought she was asking about the differences in me, "Who the heck is Ranz?"
"Oh please do stop pretending. You and Ranz were looking eye to eye in the cafeteria. I already told you I like him so back off girl he's mine!" and with that, she stormed out of the clinic.
I sighed. "Where I can I find the Elder Book of Knowledge?"
