.....
They spent years performing hundreds of tests trying to figure out what I was. They never told me what they were looking for and I still don’t know. I suffered hundreds of nights of just pure torture just because they knew I couldn't stop them. Then I was found. But instead of taking me back to my parents they brought me here. Sam’s not much older than me he lives in this small apartment by himself. Or he did, I was told I was going to be staying here and that I would be safe. I don’t feel safe. Right now i’m on the couch waiting for Sam to tell me what to do. He walks in and dusts his hands off and leans against the door frame.
“Hungry?” He asks and I look up at him studying his features the way his eyebrows are knitted in and his eyes..he’s honestly asking the question no trick involved. I nod shortly and he smiles grabbing a phone and walking off. I yawn and sit down slowly sinking into the couch and laying down. It’s been awhile since I slept on anything besides concrete.
“Gio?” I hear and i jump up shuffling away from Sam.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I’m Sorry.” I say curling up in a ball waiting for the hit I know is going to come.
“Hey it’s okay. I’m just letting you know food is here.” He says and I peek through my arms studying his face again looking for the movement that will tell me he’s lying, But it never comes. I sit up and he smiles handing me a plate of of pizza. I take it slowly looking at it then slowly taking a bite. When I finish he shows me to my room where I lay down and almost groaning about how comfy the bed is. Sam leaves and I instantly fall asleep. A skill I picked up, sleep when you can where you can.
…
I wake up screaming. I always do. Sam rushes in the room as I sit there pulling at my hair, he touches my shoulder and something in me calms instantly. I sink down gasping for breath my eyes widening as he brings my to his chest wrapping his arms around me.
“Breathe.” He says and I do. Trust him. A voice in my head says and I jump gasping.
“What?” Sam asks pulling back but I just stare at Sam really looking into his eyes for the first time. After all he is your Mate. The voice says.
“I’m...I’m crazy.” I whisper and Sam smiles.
“What your not crazy.” I stare at him and his smile falls. “What did you hear?” He asks and I shake my head. Sam waits for a second longer then shakes his head again his smile returning.
“Ok, let's go to the park.” He says throwing clothes at me and leaving the room. I put the clothes on. I don't want to go outside, I don't want to leave the room but Sam gave me an order. I follow him to the car and climb in the backseat with my head down like I was taught. I feel a hand on my knee and flinch.
“You can sit in the front you know.” Sam says and I very slowly and hesitantly climb over the seat. Sam smiles and rolls the windows down. Lean out the window. The voice says making me jump again. I cautiously lean outside the window and end up grinning. The air feels amazing as it blows my hair back. I can smell the pine in the air as Sam turns down a trail at the park, the polen that flies through the air, and hear the birds and the bugs that chirp around us. I turn to the sound of rushing water, I take a deep breath and ruah out of the car walking towards it. Then I freeze turning around and hugging myself.
“What's wrong?” Sam asks and I look at him like he’s crazy.
“What do you mean? I left without you? Aren’t you mad?” I ask and he shakes his head walking up to me.
“You are your own person. You want to go to the river, go to the river. You want to sit in the front you sit in the front. No one can tell you otherwise, okay? What those people did was awful.”
“Their still out there.” I say before I even realize what i’m doing. Sam moves closer and cups my face.
“I won’t let them hurt you.” he whispers. A burning starts from my head to my toes as Sam leans closer. Mate! The voice in my head screams. He connects our lips and I freeze the burning taking over, but its not a bad burning. I gasp and push Sam away looking at my hands. Something's happening and I don't know what.
“Let it happen.” I hear Sam say and I look up wide eyed and terrified. I start to shake so I close my eyes. When I open them i’m not on two legs anymore i’m on four. I look around everything is sharper, brighter, louder. I look at Sam and panic he snot a man he's a black wolf! I look at myself best I can and sink to the ground. I have white fur brighter than freshly fallen snow.
Whats happening? I say to no one in particular or at least I try to.
It’s in our blood. It’s what we are. I hear Sam's voice say.
It’s what we are. The voice in my head agrees.
