Around 5 years later-Ellie Renata MilesMoving to the new country was a culture shock, coming from Australia. It's so cold here in the winter, usually I'd be in summer back in Aus, but here it was dead on in the middle of winter.
My mother and I had just moved here only a week ago, we were still unpacking and settling in. I started my final year of high school and I will be finishing off the school year here at the local public high school.
People have been friendly to my mum and she even grew a quick blossoming friendship with our neighbours.
Tonight Mr and Mrs Seamont invited myself and my mother over for dinner with their family. It wasn't a particularly formal gathering, more of a casual one. I got dressed in a pair of light washed skinny jeans and a Nirvana sweatshirt. After I let my wavy honey coloured hair out of its ponytail, I gave it a quick run through with a straightener, I quickly gave my light makeup a fix, adding mascara to make my brown eyes appear bigger and went down to the kitchen where my mum was waiting for me.
"You look lovely darling"
I looked to what she was wearing, a pair of black jeans and a flowy patterned top, with a black jacket. She had her dark hair curled lightly. "You look great too mum" I reply to her. After we had a quick conversation on our outfits, we head out the door walking the few meters over the Seamont's door.
My mum anxiously pressed the doorbell lightly, and we stood there waiting for the door to open. Within a few seconds the door swung open revealing Mrs Seamont with Mr Seamont right beside her.
Mr Seamont was an intimidating man, but quite handsome for his age, he has light brown hair that had started fading into grey. He had strong facial features and dark blue eyes. Mrs Seamont was quite the opposite, she had short blonde hair that has been died with hazel eyes and soft features.
"Abbey!" Mrs Seamont exclaimed towards my mother "it's so nice to see you, and you too Ellie."
"Thank you, you guys look great too" my mum said gratefully.
"Come in ladies, come meet our children" Mr Seamont said and gestures us in.
We walk into the house that was beautifully decorated and had some modern features but is mostly old fashioned with a lot of character.
There were two children already seated at the table waiting for the rest of us to sit down. I sat next to my mother, across from the two young boys, who were definitely twins, if not identical. They looked like a good mix between their mother and fathers, having soft features but their father's eyes and hair colour.
"Hi I'm Dylan and this is my brother Obie, were twins but I'm older. Oh and were 7!" one of the little boys loudly exclaimed.
"I'm Ellie, nice to meet you two." I said quietly but made sure to be polite.
After Mrs Seamont served the food up, everyone went into conversation. My mum was talking to Mr and Mrs Seamont about her new job, while I listened to Dylan and Obie talk about their school and their friends.
"So Ellie, are you excited to start the new school?" Mr Seamont asked, interrupting Dylan's story on his excursion last week.
"Uh I guess so. It's pretty nerve-wracking starting during my last year of school, but I'm sure it will still be enjoyable." Our conversation continued on subjects until my mum started to speak.
"I noticed in the family photos you have another son?" my mum carefully interjected hoping not to pry.
"Oh that's Luca he's our big brother! He's really cool but we don't get to see him much" Obie said with a frown.
I could tell by the look in Mr and Mrs Seamont's faces that it was a sensitive subject but my mother didn't seem to realise and continued asking plenty of questions.
"Our eldest son has been in the correctional facility for the last 5 years, since he was 15." Mrs Seamont mutely replied, very upset.
"We know he didn't do what he was accused of so that's all that matters, he'll be out in 2 days anyway" Mr Seamont loudly spoke up wanting to set the story straight.
"Well I can't wait to meet him. If he's anything like these little munchkins, I'm sure he's great!" I said truthfully lightening the mood for us all.
"Hey!" Obie and Dylan said simultaneously. They started giggling the house down when they noticed they said it at the same time.
The night wound down, the subject of Luca not once brought up again and everyone seemed to enjoy their night.
At around 8 they boys went to sleep, but not without giving me a quick hug and getting a kiss on the cheek.
'Cheeky buggers' I thought to myself.
My mother and I said goodbye to the couple who waved us out the front door, all the way to our house next door. I was quite tired now were leaving. After we walked into the door I gave my mum a kiss on the cheek and went off to my room.
I got to my room, and I slowly stripped out of my clothes and hopped into a steaming hot shower. I was in there a pretty long time as I needed to shave my legs and wash my hair.
After the 20 minutes in the shower, I quickly dried off trying to shield myself from the cold air. Blow drying my hair took a while, but it was something I needed to do to keep my wavy hair tamed.
I got dressed into my blue sweatpants and my casual sports bra that I usually sleep in and I jumped into my freshly made bed from that morning, but first I gave the light a flick to turn it off.
I stayed awake for a good half an hour before I drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
