Phineas was sitting in his small bedroom on his bed. He was thinking about someone he had met at church, and slowly grown to care for more than he should have. Everytime he thought of his crush, he couldn't help but laugh and smile. He was only thirteen years old, but he was pretty sure that this was what true love felt like. He was in the middle of a chuckle when his sister, Phoenix, knocked on the door. He quickly stifled his own laughter and called out to the figure outside his door, "Come in!"
Phoenix had heard her brother laughing from her room, and it reminded her that she had been wanting to talk to him recently. She had noticed that there was something... off about him recently. Not in a bad way, but he was generally happier than he had been before and laughed at things that weren't even funny. Especially with his friends. As soon as he had invited her into his room, she opened the door. She saw him sitting on his bed, and closed the door before going to sit and join him. "What's so funny, Finn?" She asked.
"Oh, nothing. Just... stuff." Phineas stuttered as he spoke, he was obviously embarrassed about being caught. "Uh huh. So, what's up? Any recent developments to tell me about? You seem happier than usual recently." She (obviously) wasn't the type to be subtle. "Oh yah know, it's just that I've adjusted to the move. I enjoy it here now! It's not as bad as I thought it would be, though I definitely do miss my friends back in Coffeeville," he was proud of himself for lying so easily to his sister, who had always been able to get any information she wanted out of him.
Phoenix didn't believe him one bit. She knew that it was something else. Like maybe... a girl? "That's good," she feigned an encouraging smile, "have you made any new friends?" He explained to her that he had had a much easier time making friends than he had initially thought he would. "...Sally, Jordan, Tabitha... Lauren, Guila, Wendy..." he droned on and on about all the new friends he had made. Phoenix thought to herself about how many girls there were among that list. It could've been any one of them. She would have to probe deeper, "Okay, that's good!" She interrupted him somewhere around Angelica and Camilla, "but is there anyone in particular you've gotten close to?" She asked, slyly.
"Well, yeah, I suppose," He replied slowly, recovering from naming off so many people. "Terrence, Ben, and Kim are my newest best friends. I really enjoy hanging out with them" He smiled shyly. It was in this moment that he knew what she was doing, she was probing him again. Trying to see if there was anything... fishy going on. He knew better than to let her know about his crush. "Anyways, what about you?"
Phoenix knew she had been caught. He always tried to change the subject whenever she got close, "Oh you know, same old same old. Nothing's changed since dinner last night when mom and dad made me spill about everything that had happened since we moved. Anyways, back to you. I've never heard of this Kim girl before, tell me more about her." Check. "Oh, well she's really cute and sweet and she's super funny too!" Kim then. Kim's the one. Gotta be. "Oooh, does my little Finny Bear have a cruuuuushhh?!"
Phineas didn't know how to respond. He was scared. She was so close, and she didn't even know it. His blood rushed to his cheeks and his voice cracked as he yelled, "I DO NOT!" Phoenix just laughed. "You totally do!!! You like this girl!" Phineas just made a puke face to show that he truly wasn't interested in Kim. "C'mooon, you have to like someone, if not her then who?" She was advancing on his king with her rook. He saw no other choice but to explain, and so... he told her.
"WHAT?!?!?" Phoenix couldn't have seen his answer coming from ten miles away. It caught her so off guard her jaw dropped. "YOU LIKE-" Phineas had just barely covered her mouth with his hand in time. "...Sorry. You like-!" Phineas interrupted with a simple "Yes." Phoenix didn't know how to react at first, but she quickly gathered her wits. She hugged her brother and whispered, "Don't worry, your secret's safe with me." Phineas just hugged her back and smiled into her shoulder, "Thanks." Phoenix pulled away from the hug and chuckled, "You know, I used to have a crush on a guy named Ben too." Checkmate.
