Sam and I walked as quickly as we could without running to the courtyard. Warriors were flooding in as we took our seats on the wooden benches surrounding the square. Master Konrad stood in the middle, looking panicky.
"Good evening,"he said importantly. "Sorry to summon you at this hour, but I'm afraid I have some news that will displease you."
I couldn't help sniggering quietly at his formal tone.
"As you know, Kare has been dormant for a while,"he said.
Kare was the head of the daemons. I'd only met him once, and the experience wasn't one I wanted to repeat. Luckily he'd gone into hiding soon afterwards.
"Our hunters and huntresses have informed us that he is gathering more power as we speak. It is only a matter of time before they attack us again. We need the finest warriors that this tribe has to offer."
He shot a quick look in my direction.
"We need to gather you together and train you as quickly as we can. Senior Warriors will be sent out to fight, and Junior ones will be kept here to train and defend if necessary."
Elody, who was sitting in front of us, scrunched up smaller. I resisted the urge to speak to her.
"I'm sorry to break this to you now,"continued Master Konrad, looking truly sorry. "Full training will begin the day after tomorrow."
He dismissed us with a flourish and I left with the others, feeling my stomach flip with nerves. I was going to be sent away, and Elody would be here alone.
