An unusually sunny day greeted the capital, with the rays of the sun falling upon the busy commuters, bathing them with warmth and sunlight as they hurried to and fro to complete their daily tasks. The commuters looked frazzled as they clutched their smartphones tightly to their hearts, talking rapidly into their ear pieces whilst simultaneously boarding upon buses, taxis and the tube, wrapped up in a world of interest rates, price increases and inflation.

Across the city, students had taken advantage of the rare summer heat and lounged across the parks, sunbathing and partying all day, celebrating the start of summer raving and drinking. The parks were also shared with families, the men crowded around barbecues flexing their muscles in an attempt to prove their masculinity as they flipped meat on a grill.  A picnic was already laid out -curtesy of the women - and children cluttered up the remainder of the park, armed and laden with bicycles, skateboards and scooters.

Everyone was so wrapped up in their own lives, looking through rose tinted spectacles that they failed to see the minorities of the community. The old man who walked his dog everyday despite his limp and severe arthritis, the single mother who frantically hurried every day to drop her children off at school and then dashed off to work to support her family, or maybe even the little boy who after looking wistfully at elder couples who were laughing, joking and holding hands would look back at his own parents bickering and snapping at each other. The little boy would then clutch a penny in his hand, holding it tightly and blowing on it, before throwing it into the old creaky fountain and watching it sink to join the other hundreds of pennies, all rusty and brown, resting in the murky water.

Perhaps it was because everyone was so enveloped in their own lives that they failed to notice a girl sitting alone under a tree, hugging her legs as she rested her chin on her knees, watching the scenes in front of her with a thoughtful expression. Her eyes flickered between each person in the park, observing their expressions hungrily as if someone, anyone, had the answer. A notebook and a pen lay next to her, poised and prepared for a sudden burst of understanding. But none came as she sat there in the slick and heavy heat, feeling frustrated at the feeling within her, of not being able to comprehend and understand where she stood and belonged in this huge world.

She had been feeling like this for almost a year now and tried almost everything to fill that deep vortex that was beginning to slowly consume her. She had dabbled in nearly everything to find something that would make her understand, something tangible which would be the missing piece of the puzzle of her life and make her whole and complete.

Sighing, the girl rested her head on her knees and gritted her teeth in frustration, not knowing why she felt so confused and lost. It wasn’t as if she wasn’t content with the rest of her life, she had a loving family, caring friends and was on summer break from her university studies, free to do whatever she wanted. But the promise of the long glorious summer days spent sunbathing in the park and partying with her friends didn’t entice her as it used to. There was still a gaping hole within her and not being able to understand her place in this world was frustrating her to no end.
