"Okay, class, I am passing back your Spanish tests from last week. The grades were average, some of you could do better." Mr. Martinez said as he walked down the aisles of the classroom, handing each student their test. "Oh Violet." He sighed as he handed me my test. "Talk to me after class."
I looked down and the paper and saw a big letter F written in red ink. I sighed and put the paper in my backpack. I hated Spanish and I hated Mr. Martinez. This was the only class I wasn't doing well in and I can't figure out why. The bell rang and I packed up my stuff. I went up to his desk and waited for him to tell me something.

"Mr. Martinez what did you want to talk to me about?" I said and he turned around. "I'm sure you noticed your grade, Violet. Right now in my class, you have a D. I know you are a straight A student in all of your other classes so I'm not quite sure what is happening. I want you to come to class at lunch tomorrow to discuss a tutor." He said and I gasped.
"A tutor?!" I have never had a tutor all my life. "Yes, Ms. Rose, a tutor." He said and I started to walk out. "Remember, come by at lunch time tomorrow." he reassured before I walked out of the classroom.

I walked down the crowded hallway and went to my locker. "Hey Violet." someone said and tapped my shoulder.
"Oh, hey Brooke. Give me one more minute then I'll be ready." I said as I shoved books into my bag. Brooke was my best friend. We met in 6th grade and she lived down the block from me. We walked home everyday together since then. I closed my locker and we made our way outside the back door of the school. We walked to the right only to see a 4 guys beating up a kid. Brooke and I stopped walking to see what was going on.

"I heard you were gonna be a little snitch and tell Mr. Smith that I cheated on the chemistry test." The guy said has he held the poor boy against the wall. "We can't let that happen boys, now can we." He said as he punched the kid in the stomach, then the face.
"Oh shit!" Brooke yelled and they looked over at us and stopped what they were doing.
"Logan, take care of the kid." The main guy yelled as he walked over to us while his friends continued to beat up the kid.
"Um, Violet, lets leave. I kind of don't want to get hurt." Brooke said trying to grab my hand.
"Oh come on, he doesn't scare me." I said and waited for him to come near us.

"So, what you guys looking at?" He asked and got in my face.
"We were looking at you beating up that kid, and, I don't know, we might just go tell Principal Brennan." I said and got in his face.
"Violet, stop, what are you doing?" Brooke said trying to convince me to leave. He looked over at her and laughed.
He stepped closer to me and put a hand on my shoulder. "You should really listen to your friend here, before you get yourself in trouble." He said.
"Oh please, what are you gonna do to me?" I scoffed and crossed my arms. "I'm not afraid to hit girls, sweetie." He said getting in my face again.
"I'm not scared of you." I said and rolled my eyes as he grabbed the collar of my shirt.
"Listen here, I can bruise you and make you bleed, so you better start shutting up now." he said but it didn't phase me. I actually thought he was kinda cute. I looked into his light brown eyes and smiled.
"What's your name?" I asked. He looked so confused. "Uh, Gabe, why?" He said, still gripping my shirt.
"Gabe, would you mind letting go of my shirt so that my friend and I could walk home in peace?" I said sarcastically before he hit me across the face. I winced in pain and he let go of my shirt. I held my face in my hand and Brooke grabbed my other arm.
"You sure do have an attitude don't you. Don't talk to me ever again." He said before him and his friends walked away.

"Look what you got your dumbass into, Violet." Brooke said as she handed me an ice pack from her freezer. "I told you to stop."
"I know. But is it bad that I think he's kinda cute." I said and applied the ice pack to my face.
"Um, yes that's bad. You can't date a guy with anger issues and hits girls like that." She said and took a seat on the couch next to me.
"I didn't say I was gonna date him and get married on the Eiffel Tower and have 3 kids. I just said he was cute."
"Yeah, but he's crazy." she said.
I couldn't get the sight of his eyes out of my head, how the sunlight hit them and made them so bright.
