The eyes By: Jessica Elizabeth
Red eyes. Red eyes glowing in the dark. The feelng of fear. Pure fear. Violet couldn’t shake the image, it had been in her mind since she woke up that morning. For the whole day it nibbled at her thoughts, pushing its way forward until she acknowledged it. She walked to her boyfriend’s house, trying desperatley to get away from it. She walked past a small wood which always sent a shiver of fear down her spine. This wood stood next to a long road with a very narrow path. As she walked down the road the sun began to set, the wind picked up speed and she hugged herself to keep her arms warm and to push away the eyes. She wished that she’d brought a coat with her but the short journey from her house to his and then back to her’s didn’t seem that bad at first. Now she regretted that choice and cursed herself for not listening to her mother’s advice.
“Take a coat to keep warm,” her mother had said.
“I’ll be fine,” Violet had replied, stupidly.
She’d finally arrived at her boyfriend Elliot’s house. She walked up the gravelled driveway to his red front door and knocked, gasping as a gust of cold wind hit her and lifted up her pink dress. The door opened to reveal a tall male with vivid green eyes. William, Elliot’s older brother. Violet had never liked him but he’d always liked her. There was something about his eyes, they were too green and almost inhuman, like he was always watching her and wasn’t what he seemed to be. He yelled for Elliot , never taking his eyes off of the young girl at the door. Elliot appeared in the doorway and she smiled and he grabbed two coats, one for him and one for her.
“Bye mum, I’ll see you tomorrow,” he yelled towards the backdoor. The blood red front door slammed shut and Violet put on the green coat that she’d been given.
“Ready to go?” she asked as they walked out of the garden.
“Ready,” he replied with a smile. They both walked towards the woods, hand-in-hand.
As they approached the woods she noticed that the road had been closed off and the equipment had been set up to dig. She wondered why and was amazed at how fast it had happened.
“They’ve closed off the road El, it wasn’t like that when I walked through 10 minutes ago.”
“I guess they needed everything set up for tomorrow. It looks like we have to walk through the woods, will you be ok?” he asked, he was aware of her fear and was a little skeptical. Afterall, it was just a wood and nothing bad had ever happened there. Violet nodded and they walked up to the entrance together, Violet shivering slightly. Something wasn’t right.
A couple minutes later and Violet was on her own. She’d gotten lost when they reached the middle of the woods. It was pitch black and completely silent, too silent. This unnerved her and soon she couldn’t walk out of pure fear. The image of the red eyes flashed in her mind and she cursed at herself for thinking about them. A flash of lightning lit up the trees and for a second she she calmed down. A clap of thunder masked the sound of a twig breaking behind her, making her oblivious to it. She walked forward a couple of steps and fell over a root. She looked at the floor and saw a flash. Just in that spot. She jumped up and looked again. Sure enough there was the number 17 imprinted on the floor and it was glowing like it was on fire. All around her the number 17 was glowing and then disappearing, only to appear again in the same spot. She screamed and ran. Falling over roots, stumps and small animals running for cover. Tears ran down her face and flew into her hair. Her face stung from tiny cuts create by stray branches and brambles. She ran out of the woods and straight into Elliot, sobbing hard. He caught her and felt her body heave as she cried. He hugged her tight and comforted her as they walked home.
They got home and she shut all the windows and doors and made sure she locked them.
“Are you going to tell me what happened to you in there?” Elliot asked Violet. She sat down and told him everything from getting seperated to the numbers glowing on the ground and in the trees to when she found him.
“I saw something similar too but instead of a number I just saw your name. It glowed too. Maybe the number is a signal, try to look at the books you’ve read to see if t means anything,” he said. Violet ran and grabbed the last book she’d read, a murder mystery. She flicked to page 17 and screamed, dropping the book. Elliot picked it up and saw that over the whole page was ‘Violet’ in blood. It couldn’t have been in red pen, the lines ran and there was a strong smell of iron. He closed the book and hugged her.
“I’ll never let anyone hurt you, don’t worry.”
Violet went and had a shower, getting rid of the whole night and Elliot burned the book. She got got dressed and sat with Elliot on her bed. They both laid down and she fell asleep in his arms, not seeing a chilling smile appear on his face and his eyes glow red.
