Once upon a time

My head was hung low

My gaze to the floor

A lump in my throat

Once upon a time

My lips were in a frown

"You mustn't look at them.

Just keep your head held down."

Once upon a time

A voice in my head

It told me not to cry

But to deal with it instead

Once upon a time

Insults jolted into my ear

"Go away, you idiot.

You're not wanted here."

"Your friends never liked you.

Come on, who would?

You're so repulsive.

No one ever should."

"Your face is terrible.

Your personality even worse.

Anyone that knows you

Is unfortunately cursed."

Once upon a time

I began to run away

My voice cried out

As tears soaked my face

Once upon a time

I sobbed in my room

My pillows were wet

They would be drenched soon

Once upon a time

I cried myself to sleep

My bed sheets were folded

But my pillows in a heap

Once upon a time

It was all in my mind

They were all nice to me

How could I have been so blind?

It was all in my head

The insults were never there

I merely thought they were saying them

Though I was never aware

Once upon a time

Many years were spent

Thinking people were judging me

And look how that went

Once upon a time

I realized what I needed to do

"Don't listen to the voices in your head.

It's not what's best for you."

Once upon a time

My head was held high

I waved to my friends

And looked up at the sky

Once upon a time

The sun shined bright

Trees blew in the breeze

It was a beautiful sight

Once upon a time

I didn't feel that happy in a while.

I strode on that day.

I strode on with a smile.
