RECAP:

"I work as a lifeguard, silly," he said, grinning at me. "I wish I had taken a day-off if I had only known you were in the Cove."

I held back a grin. Hold it together Elle. He's just sweet like that.

I followed him to his car, feeling vulnerable to the heat. "Well, you could always visit me either here or.. you know where my gram lives," I assured him.

His lips curled up to a smile, "Of course I do. I take care of her garden every Saturday."

Chapter Four

"You never told me that Joshua takes care of your garden every Saturday," I said to Grandma during dinner.

"Who do you suppose takes care of it, then?" She carefully chewed on her spaghetti.

I looked down at my food. "I expected a company or something."

"Is that what you want, Ellie? I can ask a company of you want?" Grandma asked in her sugary voice. No, she wasn't mad. In fact, she wanted me to be happy.

And I was. I actually looked forward to seeing Joshua around the house tomorrow and every Saturday for the rest of the summer. "No, Joshua is just fine," I assured her.

So fine.

"Wonderful!" Grandma said. "So how did you like the bakery? Did you eat anything?"

"Just a bagel," I replied. I was conscious about my weight so that as soon as I get back to New York I will be admired by all my friends. "And I didn't actually bake anything yet." I thought that maybe I should get to know the place first before picking up tools and break them the first day. Although I can't quite picture someone breaking a mixer.... you know what I mean.

Grandma frowned, "Oh c'mon Ellie, the least you can do is eat my food. Back in my days someone as skinny is what girls call 'fat' these days."

Knowing that it's true, I said, "Gram, it's really fine. I promise I will eat something 'fattening' soon." I wasn't quite sure if I meant what I said because if I went back there weighing ten pounds heavier, I probably won't be treated just as I was right now.

"Atta girl."

As I was watching Animal Planet in my room to sleep, the chorus of Katy Perry's song "Teenage Dream" played. My phone vibrated beside me, and I quickly answered it when I saw that it was Jenny.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Hey Elle." There was a sense of exhaustion and sadness in her voice. I wonder what happened.

Sitting up, I asked her,"Hey what's wrong?"

"Everything. Just this whole planet is fucked up."

I scoffed. "You can say that again---- no really. Was it Kevin?" Kevin was her boyfriend of 2 years. Sweet. Funny. But bitch, I swear, if he hurts my best friend at all---

"No, no, it's not Kevin."

"Then who is it?" I pressed, getting annoyed. What could possibly be wrong in her life. Well except me leaving, her life is perfect. She has the perfect family, a boyfriend, a beautiful face...

I heard her take a deep breath. "It's Tristan."

The pit of my stomach dropped at the sound of his name. This can't be good. My mind raced through what might have happened to him. A car accident? A gang fight? An injury? I braced for the worst, but I knew deep down that it would hurt me somehow...

Jenny continued with the same tone in her voice, "I'm so sorry, Elle but..."

I could feel the tears building up at the corners of my eyes as my chest stiffened. I couldn't breathe. I knew exactly what was coming up next. Please don't say what I think you will, I prayed.

"Tristan..."

I gasped for air, no longer able to hold in the tears.

"He was cheating on you."
