The hot August air hung sticky and unavoidably persistent in the muggy courtyard of Manhattan High. Though summer seized to continue for those entering school- the weather, unaware of such transition, remain unhindered.
Across the open courtyard gazed a young girl's eyes at the crowded concrete jungle before her. She scouted the clusters of teens in search of her friend but instead caught the glimpse of a boy, no older than she was, staring back at her.
His hair was an elegant shade of copper that glistened in the dim morning light. His piercing blue eyes shimmered with such definition she could almost swim in the color. He was propped against one of the building walls, his gaze so intense that she completely forgot just how long she was staring back. Her cheeks began to flush with color.
"Hey... Rox!" She heard a familiar voice behind her, breathing exasperated. She turned her attention off the boy with blue eyes to see her friend sprinting towards her. "Morning Vera," Roxanne greeted her friend, "where have you been? I've been waiting all morning."
Vera pressed herself up against the courtyard wall while desperately trying to catch her breath. She pulled her inhaler out from her pocket and inspired a deep puff of the medicine. "I'm so sorry dude... I was running... late..." Roxanne put her hand on Vera's shoulder. "Are you going to be okay, Ver?" Concern grew on her face. "I'll be okay, there is nothing these bitch lungs can't handle." The two looked at each other and laughed slightly. "Which class are you going to first?" Vera asked while shuffling through the mess of textbooks and papers in her hands.
"Um, Psychology I think?" She answered uncertainly. Roxanne quickly turned to look back at where the mysterious blue-eyed boy stood, but he was already gone.
Vera fumbled with the crumpled up piece of paper that is her class schedule. "Awe man! I got Gym first thing in the morning! And to make matters worse, I got stuck with Coach Serkotski again!" She mumbled angrily, "I hope he doesn't make us do frickin' jumping jacks on the first day back like he did last year, old Russian coot!"
Roxanne was still overlooking the building wall where she saw the boy; her heart not yet steady. "HEL-LO! Earth to Roxanne!" Vera shouted, waving a free hand in front of her face, "are you even listening?"
"Uh, yeah sorry." Vera glared up at her friend with a wary glance. "What are you even ogling at, dude? You're creeping me out." Vera questionably peered in the same direction, confused. "I-" just then, the bell rang and everyone scurried to their first class of the new year. "Oh shit," Vera shouted, "I need to get going! That crotchety old bastard will have me running laps if I'm late. See ya at lunch." Vera took off down the hall before Roxanne had a chance to reply, her long brown hair flowing from side to side. "See you then, Ver," she said after her friend, but more to herself.
Roxanne wasn't particularly worried about being late her first day. This was only her second year at Manhattan high and could easily blame her tardiness on ignorance. She ambled down the hallway until she reached her assigned classroom. The door was locked, so she knocked and waited for someone to let her in.
