~ Prologue ~

Black. All she was seeing was black. Persistence Waters was well aware that her eyes were open, and she was definitely not blind. So where did her sight go? Where did that guiding light that gave her reason to life disappear to? Right. It was being lowered into the ground.

Standing next to the bright, young woman was two people. One she was rather fond of, and the other the exact opposite. The one she was fond of stared back, with wide, innocent eyes sparkling with the same dazzling light shade of blue as a fresh diamond, like Persistence's own eyes. It was the exact same pair that used to smile at Persistence every night before bed. Those eyes were soon paired with a small curl of gentle brown hair, like the shade of coffee, and tiny hands that would wrap around Persistence's thumb when she held her. The other, a large, burly man, stood with no emotion on his face. His darkened, blonde hair was being tugged down with the greasy hands of his oils. The sharp, nearly-black eyes that thankfully neither Persistence or the other youngling inherited, further ripped open the gap that fell between him and the rest. He towered over the two girls like a New York skyscraper, intimidating and judgmental. Those windows they called eyes were shut with blinds. No one inside, no one outside. Just a shell of the man that used to be.

Suddenly, the tattered cream-colored journal that was glued to Persistence's shaking hands were wet with tears that had been fighting a battle to stay within their homes. The little child sensed the unease in her big sister, and, having the full intention of drawing away attention from the vulnerable woman that stood before them, the little child wailed. That scream, alone, shattered the glass that held the skyscraper together, and all three of them tumbled into a dark oblivion. Black. All they saw was black. And it wasn't wrong.

A/N: Hope this little blurb gets you excited for what's to come! This prologue is meant to set the mood for most the book and give you a look into Persistence's past. I promise the more you get into the story, the more interested you'll get. Just give me a chance ;)
