Sticks and Stones
Sticks and stones may break my bones.
But words can never hurt me.
At least that's how their silly rhyme goes.
They drilled the phrase into our minds and we,
Believed them.
They told us to brush off what others say.
Don't be a tattle-tale.
They aren't worth it anyway
We only care if they make you frail,
With actions.
If they push you down then you can cry and scream.
Tell us and we'll set it right!
But calling you names shouldn't haunt your dreams.
We will not fix your silly fight,
It's only words.
But after all of this time, I've realized something.
Sticks and stones may break your bones,
But it's words that hurt the most.
It's words that leave us killing and cutting.
Are words that turn people into ghosts,
Still just words?
Words cause hatred and violent actions.
Like racism and homophobia.
Dividing us up into tiny factions.
Which bring even more sexism, and transphobia,
And the list goes on.
The oppression people based on things beyond ourselves.
His sex, her gender, their religion, your race and my orientation.
These are not things people can change about themselves.
And then suddenly these words of hate take over our nation,
The land of the free.
So maybe next time you make fun of him for being gay,
Think about how he might go home and hurt himself.
And next time you make fun of them because their pronouns are
They,
Think about how long it took them to love themselves,
And you took it away.
So stop telling me that words aren't painful
Because while open wounds can heal,
Words don't go away which makes them more fatal.
Words are a bigger deal,
Right now.
