I've been watching The Simpsons since I was 8, when the show was in season 24. I remember coming home every Monday after school to see if there was a new episode from Sunday night. I also remember that my favorite character was Lisa. When I went into 3rd grade then 4th I remember looking up "simpsons" on YouTube and finding a bunch of people saying things like "it got worst after season 9". I always thought that was just 90's kids being 90's kids, I still thought the show was some masterpiece. Then 5th grade happened, I started losing interest in the show. Yea, sure I watched the newest episode, but they just didn't have the same effect as before. Each episode was just forgettable, and I always thought that the worst thing any one can call one's piece of media is ''forgettable''. If a piece of media is ''forgettable'' then that means it's nothing. If someone was to watch the episode ''Red Fish, Blue Fish, Blow fish'' that person would probably remember it years down the line. This episode was funny, sad ,and left you with something to think about. This episode also wasn't afraid to make cry, and I know The Simpsons is a comedy, but sometimes you should make your viewers cry ,because if your viewers cry that means you made them remember their time watching this episode in someway. I can't say this about some modern episodes, take the episode ''Fears of a Clown''. This episode is forgettable and shows how the characters have reduced to single trait (in this case Bart). The reason I bring up this episode in particular is because it made me mad, the plot of the episode is that Bart has to go to prank rehab, but the only reason he's doing it is because of Marge. I thought that this would be a call back to a time where Bart was just a kid trying to make his mom proud, that didn't happen. At the end of the episode Bart pulls this massive prank and he didn't even feel any remorse, he was back to his normal modern self , a jack ass who only cares about himself, there was no development, and for what, a crappy joke about Bart pranking everyone. Not everything has to be a joke, if the writers decided to have Bart not go through with the prank because he loves his mom. This could have been a meaningful episode and that's the problem nothings meaningful any more, everything's a crappy joke and its sickening. I'm not saying humors bad or anything like that, I'm just saying that making everything a crappy joke ends up turning one's show into a forgettable piece of garbage that isn't worth ones time.
Modern episode tend to date them selves, and I'm ok with a show talking about a current topic or issue if it has intelligent or comedic commentary on the certain topic. Modern episodes do the complete opposite. A good example would be 'Looking for Mr.Goodbart'' now the main plot was actually decent showing Bart as someone who can show love and remorse for other, but my problem comes from the secondary plot which was about 'Pokémon Go' months after it was a thing. This plot poked more fun at Homer then the actual game its self, when writing about a certain trend in comedic way, like a game, there should be some sort of offensive humor that makes fun of the topic, so that a piece of media can still be funny year's down the line and make more sense. The Simpsons should never have a episode about certain trends, but they have to.
The Simpsons have been on the air for close to thirty years, their running out of ideas. Nothing interesting, episodes like 'The Great Phatsby' try new things but end up failing. The shows way past its expiration date, I think it's time to put the show to rest and let it die.
In the beginning of this long rant I mentioned that my favorite character was Lisa Simpson, if she aged with the show she would be 38 years old, it's almost like I grew up with Lisa, but she never grew with me. One day The Simpsons will air its last episode, it will be heart breaking to know that this show that has always been apart of my life will be a memory. This show needs to be put out of its misery and leave before it gets worse and I don't want
to see it go, but that's apart of growing up its depressing and all but it needs to happen so the show can truly be remembered as success. Thanks to the five people who read this long ranting post, I wanna leave you with a quote from Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls.
'Gravity Falls was never meant to be a series that goes on and on forever it's meant to be an exploration of the experience of summer and in a larger sense a story about childhood its self. The fact that childhood ends is exactly what makes it so precious and why you should cherish it while it last'- Alex Hirsch
