It was another boring day in school, I just wanted to get home, yet our bus was stuck in traffic. I could feel the steady engine of the bus roar beneath my feet and the chatter of various students around me, when my brother called out to me.
"Oi! Are you even listening?" When I didn't respond he raised his voice "We are discussing something important, can you please listen for a change?".
I turn around to see a huge smile on the face of my brother as all pairs of eyes looked my way expectantly.
"Is it something weird again?" I said as I rolled my eyes.
My brother looked very bothered by my response.
"I never say weird stuff, so stop rolling your eyes it is very irritating"
"Sure, sure now what did you want to tell me?" I replied.
"Well, I just had a great idea! And everyone else seems to agree as well."
"What is it now?" I asked.
"So, we all have agreed to make a trip upstate"
"What trip and where to?" I inquired.
"There seems to be an empty farmhouse that had belonged to our aunt, you probably don't know about it."
"Which farmhouse?" I asked, as it seemed my brother was successful in grabbing my attention.
"Doesn't really matter, the point is that it is free for us to stay in if we want to"
"That sounds interesting but when?"
"In the winter vacations starting next week!" he replied cheerfully.
"Hmmm...but will our parents allow us? Seeing how you and Aanya are in 12th and others like me and Kabir are in 10th while the rest are in 11th"
"That's not the issue leave that to me." He replies proud fully, "So you're coming right?"
"Sure, I don't have anything to do anyways."
"Ok then" exclaimed my brother.
"We will move out for the trip on the 24th via bus, it seems our destination is in the mountains so pack a lot of cozy clothes as well as supplies...also everyone confirm again, I will be pissed if anyone changes face at the last moment"
"Don't worry too much, when you do you frown you look like a pug, like my pet dog...'pat' 'pat' 'pat'." says Arshia as she continues to pet my brother visually irritating him.
"God dammit, can you please stop?" says my brother while swatting away Arshia's hand and continues.
"Anyways someone form a group to talk, to make it easier to communicate"
"On it" replies Prateek.
Then finally my brother stood up and exclaimed as he got ready to get off at our bus stop.
"Ok plan confirmed for now, see you guys on Monday and we'll discuss more?"
"Sure!" everyone replied in unison.
I called out my farewell and also got up from the seat and started to walk when I staggered for a bit, it seemed like I stepped on something as I looked around to find a small pocket knife lying below before my right foot.
"Weird" I murmur as I pick up the pocket knife and shove it in my pocket, thinking of asking everyone who it belonged to, but something seemed off and my brother had already gotten off, so I just left it in my pocket and got off, somehow I got a very bad feeling about it, as I stared at it on my way home.
Oh, how much I wish I had not picked it up, I would never have if only I had realized the truth behind it, but it was too late then.
