Chapter Ten

Two weeks later.

It’s the dead of night when I’m woken up by a loud CRASH. I slowly blink open my eyes, forcing my body to tear away from sleep. I hear another BANG, and I immediately sit up, covers flying off the top half of my body. There’s a third, softer bang. One much closer. Downstairs. The slamming of a screen door. My door. I jump from my bed and find my feet running, carrying me downstairs.

When I get there, I see my front door open and close shut again with the force of the first slam. I race towards it, looking out past the screen where I can see a pale, shirtless boy in light blue pajama pants running across the street. I try to call out his name but it gets caught in my throat as he slams into his own house.

I stand silently, wordlessly, frozen, in my doorway until…

BANG.

I realize what the first crash was. I know what that sound is. Dread drips like poison through my veins. I run to the house phone, dialing 911 without hesitation.

“911, what’s your emergency,” the lady on the other line asks me calmly.

“My name is Sarah Prince, I live at 6 Brookview Circle, and I just heard a gunshot come from my neighbors house.”

“Sarah, please stay on the line. Cops are on their way right now and will be there in five minutes.”
