Chapter 5

"... Mathematics are a very important part of civilization. if math didn't exist how will we measure the amount of space in our houses or the amount of money we have...?"

Algebra 101.

'Why can't we just get to the math!? I hate boring lectures!' I shout in my head.

This classroom is huge, as a college class would be, with rows and rows of seats on different steps. mr. Edwards stands at the front in the big alcove below our seats.

My eyes wander over to the window and for a split second I think I see JB! but I blink and look again and he's gone.

'Clear your head Arianna. your seeing things. just pay attention to mr. ed-'but before I can finish my thought, the announcements come over the loudspeaker.

"Phone call for Arianna Rostron in the office! phone call for Arianna Rostron. thank you."

I leave my voice recorder on my desk so later I can take notes. then I get up and head to the office.

I wait nervously outside the office till principal browsky lets me in. who's calling? gianna? no her phone can't reach LA. my mom? she should know I'm in class now she wouldn't call.

"Ms. Rostron come in." the lady at the desk says. I walk into the office and she hands me the telephone.

"Hey pipsqueak!" a harsh voice says. "I'm watching you and I will get you!" Justin hisses. finally I decide to just drop off voice recorders at all my classes and hide in my dorm room to wait for jaz and kii to get back.

When I get back to my dorm room I close all the blinds to the windows and cover the peep hole in the door with a calendar. then I get in my bed and wait. and wait. and wait. and wait. finally the girls get back and decide not to ask me what's wrong. obviously they heard the announcement and since I look so scared, I think they pieced together that it wasn't a pleasant call.

After a long awkward silence, kii pipes up.

"so who wants a study party?!" she exclaims in her singy voice. at that note jaz turns up some music and kiara drops some books on my desk top.

Eventually, we all end up finishing our first day homework and start singing karaoke to songs like 'wiggle' and 'turn down for what!'.

They cheered me up for now but that's when the phone rang.

I was about to tell them not to answer it but kiara rushed up and pulled the phone off its stand.

"Hiya!" she said into the mouthpiece. by now I'm huddled in the corner of my bed."its for you!" she continued.

I take the phone and put it up to my ear, shakily.

"H-Hello." I stutter.

Then Gianna's voice comes through, confusing the hell out of me. "Arianna are you ok? what's the matter?"

"Gianna omg I'm sorry I thought you were someone else! I'm fine." I answer. "but I thought your cell couldn't reach California."

"I got a new iPhone just like yours!" she sounds so happy. wish I could say the same for myself. "oh by the way I called to say that I visited your family and Cynthia says 'hi'."

"Oh ok," I answer. "where is she can I talk to her?"

"Yea, sure one minute..." she says her voice fading in the speaker. "here ya go...!" then she leaves and Cynthia comes on.

"Heeeyyy sis wassupp?!" she sounds so perky. How is everyone so happy except me?!

"Nothing much. omg! Hollywood is beautiful i'll send you a pic. I get off for a second an send one of the pictures I took of the Hollywood sign.

"Beep! there you go!" I said as I sent the pic.

"Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod!!!" Cindy shrieked, hardly putting spaces between her words. "your so lucky! wish I was there with you! I have to go here's Gianna." then Gianna picks up the phone,

"Oh hey! by the way who picked up the phone? did you meet new friends?" she asked.

"Yea," I answered. "that was kiara but I also met a nice girl named jasmine!" I say turning the phone on speaker. "jaz, kii, say hi!"

"Heeeyyy!" they answer in unison.

"Gianna, I've heard so much about you!" kiara gushed.

"Awww! thanks! I think. well anyway I gotta go. nice talking to you Arianna, we miss you!" Gianna replies.

"I miss you to! bye! call again soon!" I say goodbye and hang up.
