I pulled the heavy post-office door open and poked my head in. It was dark and I didn't see anybody inside. So I walked in. I looked down each isle to see if anybody was there. Then, in the last isle, there was a man. He was curled up in a blanket on the floor, a giant back-pack sitting on the floor next to him.
I noticed multiple granola bars poking out of the pocket on the side of the backpack. I slowly crept over trying not to make any noise. I was now kneeling next to the bag just about to reach for the food, and then he spoke.
"If you're hungry you could've just asked," the man sat up.
I didn't speak, I just stared at him. He grabbed one of the granola bars and handed me one, and I took it. I slowly teared open the wrapper and quickly ate the delicious food. I was still a little shaky because I hadn't had food since lunch at school the day before. But I decided not to ask for more.
The sun had already risen and the dew on the leaves outside was sparkling. I sat next to a window as I watched the man shove the large blanket into the pack.
"Here, take this last granola bar, you look like you need it," he handed me the last granola bar and then started to walk away. I wondered if he was going to get hungry, and if he was going to come back.
"Are you sure you don't want it sir?" I slid the granola bar back to him.
He slid it back. "No, no. I can buy more. You take it."
So I took it and began to eat it as I watched the man walk away, still wondering if he was going to come back.
I was still hungry after eating it, and decided I was going to go look for money. Of course I was too young to get a job. Maybe I could mooch off of people. Surely they would give a sad looking boy at least a dollar.
I stood up and walked out the door following the same path the man took. Should I follow him? Would he notice? As I thought about whether or not I should follow him, I ended up going the same way he was going anyway. I walked down the street away from the post-office and toward the church. The bright sun shone on the sidewalk making the rain from yesterday dry up. There were few puddles left except for the large ones that took forever to dry.
I continued walking until I saw the man walk into a convenience store. I followed him in oblivious to the fact that he would notice me following him. As soon as I walked in I noticed a bag of mini chocolate donuts. They looked absolutely delicious and my mouth was starting to water. I looked around not noticing anybody around. I grabbed the donuts off the shelf and ran out the door.
Then I heard a yell and I ran faster. I had ran at least a block and a half before I ducked behind a building. I slammed myself against the wall and stood, breathing heavily, donuts in hand. I wasn't hearing anybody coming after me. So I sat down and opened the bag. I took a bite of the first donut and closed my eyes. It had been forever since I'd had a donut. Or any dessert for that matter. The chocolate melted in my mouth.
I looked down at the bag. One more left. I hadn't noticed I had eaten them that fast. But then again there was only six in the bag. I ate the last donut and walked out of the alley, looking both ways to see if there was anybody there. There was a few people, but they didn't seem to be paying any attention to me. I started walking until I started hearing loud music coming from a store. There was a large sign hanging above the door that said The Tat Cat. The loud music was interesting, and kinda catchy, so I walked in.
