Chapter 1: Letters to Heaven
My toes dangled off the rocky surface of the cliff that would be the only witness to my demise. I couldn't begin to recall what had caused me to stare death in the face out of my own will. I struggled to free myself of the memories but, they pulled me in like the high tide and drowned me with horrifying flashbacks.
It was a hospital, stark white, an alcove of chalky desolation with the rattle of doctor's, readying themselves to witness my son's birth and glance upon this common miracle that was soon to take place. The contractions were coming, abruptly yet excruciatingly. My shrill cry sounded throughout the nursing ward echoing off the walls. The baby was coming.
After the contractions were over, instead of finding myself holding my son swaddled in a cheap blue blanket, I was told my preborn was taken to an incubator and that I wouldn't be able to see him at the moment.
My heart dropped, the weight of it tugging me down. This premature child, who I will share an everlasting bond with, was the only reassurance that held me together, so my emotions wouldn't spew out and consume my stable composure.
A burning sensation spread throughout my throat, as if I had swallowed a mouthful of sand. I could hardly breathe. I needed to hold him.
