Today I took my uncles truck and I'm driving it to town. It's pretty broken down, it's rusted, the paint has come off and there are scratch marks here and there. But it's still useable.I try and use the radio but I only hear static. I keep thing all the stations but they either just go static or nothing even comes on.
I Yelp as I come to a bump in the road. The car comes to a halt and I bang my head onto the weal.
That's gonna leave a bruise.
I groan as I instantly feel the ache in my head becoming more and more painful, but all I could think about was wether I crashed the truck into something or damaged it. I rest my head on the seat and massage it, trying to make the pain go away. After I felt it go away a little I started up the truck again until I hear a crying sound.
It's coming from the front of the truck. I slowly get out of the seat and make my way towards the front. The sound become louder and louder. Until it stops. I let my curiosity get the best of me and peek over the edge of the truck to see who or what I hit.
In front of me is a little brown rabbit. Lying on the ground, with his leg bended in an uncomfortable position. I merely gasped as drops of blood were coming out of it's leg.
I was beyond puzzled, I didn't know what to do. I had to aid him somehow, but what if uncle doesn't allow animals? I start pulling at my hair in frustration. Not even thinking I went to the back of the rusty old truck and found a blanket. Wow I would make a joke about how convenient this is if I wasn't so stressed. I quickly scooped the rabbit up into the blanket and put him on the passenger seat. I jumped back into the truck and started driving home. Every couple of minutes I would look and admire the animals fur. The colour and texture.
I finally pulled up into the back of the house and had the rabbit wrapped up in a blanket. I knew I couldn't just bring him or her into the house without my uncles permission so I make my way to the small shed in the back of the garden and put the rabbit behind some planks of wood.
I merely whisper. "I'll be back, I just have to ask permission first." The rabbit looks at me, like it understands.
With that I rush into the house and spot my uncle in the kitchen.
He tells me to set the table and I do what I was told, afterwards we sit down and eat. Well more like my nervousness was eating me.
I clear my throat and look up to my uncle. "So, you ever had a pet?" I asked. I would have face palmed myself if I wasn't in the middle of a conversation.
"I had a dog growing up but that's about it." He explains gruffly.
I nod. "What about a rabbit?" I say smoothly trying to act like I wasn't trying to convince him to get one.
"No those horrible creatures eating all my veg. They're lucky some got away or I would of shot them dead." He says, anger dripping from his voice.
I'm pretty sure all the colour drained from my face. I was tense. My heart beating loudly in my chest.
"You hunt?"
"Sure I do, I hunt deer, and rabbits, no other animal has ever really bothered me."
I nod swiftly, ignoring the fact that he actually hunts rabbits. And there's one, sleeping in his shed.
"Hey do you know where that Aoife girl lives?"
He looks at me, knitting his eyebrows together in confusion.
"She lives in the middle of the town, in a blue house and the house number is 26" He answers, confusion decorating his rough voice.
I smile and nod.
After we're done I thank him for the meal and quickly exit the back of the house.
I start sprinting towards the middle of town but soon get tired, I start running again until I spot a big blue house. I check the number '28' and almost jump with Joy.
I knock loudly on the door and wait a minute, after no one answers I knock again, louder. Still no noise.
"Hey! Why are you knocking on Mr Rheds house?" I hear a small voice behind me making me jump in surprise.
I turn around to see Aoife standing there, smiling. God I wish I had her smile.
I smile back. But my smile soon turns into a frown.
"This isn't your house?" I ask cautiously.
"No, I live two houses down" She says, laughing quietly.
"But my uncle says you lived in the house '28'"
"Well either you misheard, he's lying or he just doesn't really know or remember." She says humorously. I let out a little laugh of my own.
"Well sorry to be blunt but I need help."
