Melanie's POV

.

.

"Mel! Melanie, wait!" I turn around to see Harry running after me, a stack of books in his hands.

"Hey," I greet him when he finally catches up.

"Hey," he pants, trying to catch his breath.

"What's up?"

He chuckles. "I'm your ride home, remember?"

"Oh, that's right." I almost forgot he drove me to school today. After that, we met up after every class, walked to the others together, ate lunch on the football field, and I even ditched chemistry to watch his practice. It was great, and those girls didn't bug me at all.

"Aww look, Melanie's got a boyfriend." Uh oh. I turn around, confirming my worst thoughts. There stands Justine, with Amber, Mandy, and another girl, Becca. Damn, how many friends does this girl have?

"What now? Can't you just leave me alone?" I beg, hoping they will all walk away. Of course, with my luck, they don't.

"Oh, come on. We just want to have a chat." Justine walks up to Harry. "And what's your name, hot stuff?" She brings her hand up to his arm, but he jerks away. I try to suppress my smile at the look of surprise on her face.

"I'm Harry," he awkwardly replies.

"Hmmm, Harry... I like it," she says. "But, how about I just call you mine?" She smirks and steps closer. I try not to gag at her flirtatious attitude.

"I'll pass," Harry simply states, and this time I can't hide my smile. Justine is caught off guard, and I'm enjoying every second of it.

"Oh, and why's that?" She asks, clearly irritated by his response.

"I already have a girlfriend," he shrugs. I can't help it when my heart drops. Of course he does...

"Who? This slutbag over here? Come on, you can do better than her. Come on! She's not even pretty!"

My vision blurs. I try to say something to defend myself, but my voice seems to be trapped behind the lump in my throat. Here we go...

"Excuse me? Don't talk about her like that! She may not be as popular as you, but I would choose her over you in a heart beat." My heart rises and swells at his words. He grabs my hand and we start to walk away. I turn around and flip her off before we take off running to his car.

When we both hop in, we burst out laughing.

"That was priceless! Did you see the look on her face when I told her I had a girlfriend?" Harry says between laughs. I stop laughing at the mention of his girlfriend and pull on my seatbelt.

"What's wrong?" He asks when he notices my silence.

I shake my head. "Nothing," I say, unconvincingly.

"Seriously, are you alright?" He looks at me. He almost sounds... concerned.

I sigh. "Who's your girlfriend?"

He seems caught off guard. "What?"

"What's her name?" I ask, and he starts laughing again. "What?" I ask, but he only laughs harder. "What's so funny?"

"I- I don't- I don't have a- girlfriend," he says in between breaths.

"Sorry?"

"I don't have a girlfriend,"

"Then why... Why did you tell Justine you did?" I'm so confused.

"So she would back off. I'm not interested in her, so I made her think I'm not available." He smiles. Relief floods throughout me and I smile back.

Harry pulls on his seatbelt and pulls out to drive home. We laugh about everything the whole drive. I'm not sure why, but I'm really happy he doesn't have a girlfriend. It's because you like him, my subconscious says, but I ignore the ridiculous thought. I don't like Harry, he's just a close friend. A really funny, sweet, caring, good-looking friend. I don't like Harry Styles.

Do I?
