As a combat medic I didnt need much. Just a plasma smg, handgun, my knife, and my medic bag. I'll admit all this equipment is a lot heavier than I expected, but it's nothing I couldnt handle. Working on my grandma's farm definitely helped me get stronger. I started to make my way to the hangar after I finished double checking everything. Somehow I managed to get lost, despite the clear signs in the hallways, but I managed to be there on time.
Eric: Come on put your bag in the truck. The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can come back.
Alzina: Abnat isnt here yet though.
Eric: Alright well I guess it's fine. He's not late yet.
The three of us turn to the sounds of footsteps and see him running towards us.
Abnat: Sorry for being last you guys. I got a little lost.
Alzina: Doesn't matter, one of us was going to be last no matter what.
Eric: Hurry up and load your gear in the truck we need to get going now.
Abant finally loads his pack and gets in the backseat with me. With all of us now inside, Alzina starts driving towards the open hangar doors.
Desamonda: Wait I thought the only way in and out of the city was by train.
Eric: For regular civilians it is, but the rich can buy a plane ticket if they want to. For government officials and military personal there are secret hidden tunnels in the walls around the city. Theres always a scanner near the entrance. All you need is proper identification and the tunnel will open.
Alzina continues to drive and follow a road that leads towards the wall. Eventually the asphalt road turns into a dirt one as we reach the wall. Alzina stops the truck and out of nowhere a blue flicking light, emitting from the wall, turns on and scans the truck. After a couple seconds, the light turns green, turns off, and a tunnel entrance opens up. Alzina casually changes gears and drives the truck through the tunnel.
Abnat: Wow that's pretty cool. How does it work?
Eric pulls out his his military ID and shows it to Abnat.
Eric: These cards are more than just for show. They help open gates and the tunnels out here. So I suggest you hang on to yours.
Eric: (chuckling) Let me guess you two are fresh recruits.
Desamonda: Um yes, how did you know?
Abnat: I'm not but I have always lived in the outskirts of the city.
Eric: You two have this shock and awe type of face at everything that you're looking at. Especially you. Is this your first time being seeing Aldric?
Eric nods his head in my direction and I respond.
Desamonda: Well it's my first time being in any city sir. I've always lived in the town of Deenlic and rarely visited neighboring towns.
Eric: Well sorry you had to see your first city like this country girl. Things have been getting more stressful lately. You don't have to call me sir either. The higher ups stopped assigning ranks and I guess captain, major, and the variations for general only matter now.
The rest of the ride continues in silence as we emerge from the tunnel. I look out the window and see beautiful green plains with trees growing. It almost makes me forget that we're at war right now. As we start to get closer to the camp that was spotted, the land becomes more grim. Trees have been cut down, the grass is definitely yellow and dying, and there seems to be no sounds of wildlife coming from whatever little forest there is left.
