Chapter 1 : Runaway groom
SO HYEON
Today is Nam So Hyeon’s big day.
Happy laughter surrounded me as I twirled around in my wedding dress. This was not easy to do since the dress was really heavy and I was not used to wearing full long skirts.
Out of breath, I stopped in front of the long mirror to gaze at my reflection. Long dark brown hair curled just below my shoulders, big eyes framed by arched eyebrows and lips that were neither full nor thin. I perused my reflection sideways and decided that the make-up artist at least did a good job in making my nose seem sharper.
“You look great So Hyeon-ah,” my best friend AiLee reassured me for the fifth time that day. I blushed and sat beside her on the plush sofa.
“I’m just really nervous,” I told her, flicking the magazine she was reading out of her hands. “I keep thinking something will go wrong.”
AiLee opened her mouth to answer but whatever she wanted to say had to wait as the group of bridesmaid approached us to coo over my dress again. Instead of feeling irritated by the attention, I felt deliriously happy as I giggled and blushed with each praise. From the corner of my eyes, I could see AiLee shake her head and roll her eyes at their endless gushing.
“Ok girls, give the bride to be a chance to breathe…” she shooed them out of the room and closed the door with a relieved sigh. “Really. I’ve lost count of the times I heard ‘you’re so lucky! To be able to actually wed someone you love. You got your happy ending’!” she mimicked the hand gestures and facial expression of the gushing ladies perfectly.
I laughed at her actions. “Seeing you do it, makes it more obvious how irritating it all was. But I’m so blinded by happiness that I barely noticed it.”
AiLee’s smile fades and she looked at me worriedly. “I’ve been meaning to ask. Are you sure about this? I mean do you really love him enough to go against your father’s wishes and marry below you?”
I gasped in shocked anger. “AiLee! How can you say that?! I am not marrying below me – yes, our status are different but it’s not like he is a beggar or anything!”
“Whoa, calm down. I just wanted to know if he was ‘THE ONE’, you know,”
I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, “Of course he is. Why would I marry him otherwise?”
She merely shrugged, “You’re sure your father really approves this union?” she asked again, making me pause and reflect.
“What is your problem? This is a happy day! Why are you bringing up these questions and spoiling my mood?” I wailed at her. “What are your motives?”
“No motives. I’m just really worried for your sake, ok. I mean people like us,” she gestured around, “–usually end up in arranged marriages to improve our social status and wealth. It’s all about improving connections. Yet, your father is allowing this?”
I was about to answer when the man in question strode in. “Appa…”
He glanced at AiLee who immediately pretended to be busy plumping up the cushions and turned back to me. “Your friend here speaks the truth. People of our status do not marry below us – which I’ve been repeating to you ever since you started dating that boy,” he grumbled. “But, although I disagree with your choices, I will not make a scene and ruin this marriage.” He assured me.
“You gave your word, appa.” I reminded him.
“Yes, yes I know,” he said and I breathed a sigh of relief. “However,” he continued, “I can’t say the same for the groom. I won’t be the one ruining this marriage. It will be the groom itself!”
