Emily found herself at the birthday party of her best friend Jack. A lot of the people present were his family, so she stayed behind the bouncy house drawing until one of her friends decided to show up.
"This parties a bummer." She heard the voice beside her, like it were trying to whisper, but it came out a little louder. It was a male, maybe in his teens."Nice drawing."
Emily was a little frighten when she heard that this person liked her drawing, but he was nowhere to be seen. After a few seconds of Emily trembling in shock, he finally appeared from behind a tiny playhouse that was worn down by all of the heavy rain happening lately.
He wore a black beanie with a white hoodie and skinny jeans. Converse with grass stains and short, auburn hair. He lit a cigarette and deeply inhaling it, then let it out as smooth as a rock. Emily had to brush the smoke away from her face and watch it fade into nothing. She has to put her drawing pad down to focus on him.
"Wh-who are you." She asks, glaring at him dead in the face. That's when Jack shows up, sunshine all over his face. "Emily, this is my cousin, Devin, I see you've already met." He looks down like he is embarrassed of what he's about to say. "Umm, he's going to stay with my family for this summer." He glanced back at the two of them.
Emily looks at Jack in distaste. She wants to know how a goody two shoes kid like Jack is any way related to a punky guy like Devin, and why he would smoke at his age.
Devin turns to the house, throws his cigarette on the dull grass, and put it out with his shoe. He walks to the door of the house, which wasnt that far away, and went in. Emily finally felt save to talk, now that he wasn't in sight.
"How old is he?" Out of all the questions she could have ask him, she asked that. "15" he replied with a bitter face, looking at the path where he walked away.
"What's going on?" Joney asked, which was one of there other friends. "I know I was late, my mom had a pimple." Joney went on and on about all the things her mom had to do to get rid of it. Eventually, they just left, not really wanting to know about popping pimples.
The day was over soon, after the cake and the presents. Then a lot of playing outside, no sign of where Devin went.
The street lights came on in the neighborhood, that was a signal that they needed to go home, so off they went, snugged in there bed, lights out, and off for the nightly rest. Emily couldnt help wondering why she was so suspicious about Devin. She also wanted to know why he was staying in her neighborhood.
