Dear Kaia,
My sweet girl, I am so sorry, but I can handle it no longer. All the tests they've done to you, and I'm the one giving up. I'm a coward. Please, my darling girl, be better than your mother. You have a gift, Kaia. A gift stronger than anyone's, but it is not time. I have foreseen it! But, you'll have to have this journey without me.
I love you, my little gift.
-MomI crushed the paper in my hands for the third time. Honestly, with my temper you'd think my gift was fire.
But no.
I am un-gifted. This, however, is supposed to be impossible. It's the year 3045, and everybody has a gift. Everybody! It's given to you by the goddess when you aren't even born yet. You show signs by the time you're 12, and by 16 a birthmark forms somewhere on your body stating your fully matured gift. An Evodite, or for short, an Evo.
Not for me.
Nope. No birthmark appeared on my 16th birthday. No signs shown at 12. Nothing. My mother is a liar. She knows of the tests and yet she has the audacity to tell me, in quote,
'You have a gift, Kaia. A gift stronger than anyone's...'
What a crock of shit.
My temper flared again, and I felt my pale, freckled face heat up. I whipped my short lilac hair around angrily, shaking the thought of hitting something again. I went to the mirror, seeing myself always helps me feel better.
I'm not exactly 'super model' (isn't that what the B.E.s [Before Evo] used to call them?) material, but I am pretty. Well, one part of me is anyways. My ember eyes. Wanna know something cool? Back in the old times, 2000's, I think, people only had dull eye colors. For example: blue, green, or brown. Isn't that strange? I've only seen a brown a handful of times. Green is common, but only really dark green. Blue, though?
I'd marry a person with blue eyes.
Blue eyed people are so rare that it's a legend. No Evodite has had blue eyes, apparently a non-Evodite doesn't have them either.
Ember is uncommon though. The bottom of my iris being yellow, middle is orange, and the top being blood red. It doesn't really match my natural lilac hair. Oh! That's another thing!
People used to be born with weird hair colors. Blond, brown, red, or black. It's so strange. You don't see any of those anymore. Maybe red, but those are for flammers.
Oh, right, flammers.
The gift everyone was sure I would have.
Flammers have eye colors similar to mine, but not ombré like mine are. The cool thing is- their hair? It's flames. When they get angry, their hair literally catches fire, but somehow doesn't burn. It's amazing to watch, and I was ecstatic when I was 12 and my eyes changed colors.
Another common thing- did I forget to mention that? Whoopsies.
When you're born you're born with white, transparent eyes. Strange, I know, but beautiful all the same.
My hair, however, stayed lilac. My freckles didn't spread across my face like a flammers, only across my nose and cheeks. My temper? Well, let's just say it wasn't pretty. When my face flushes scarlet and my eyes almost glow, I'm angry. You could almost call my temper a gift.
It's not.
Multiple tests have been done on me. Poking, proding doctors and their technology gifts. Nothing. Not a single damn thing. Funny thing is, I'm the only case ever reported.
Ever.
I am alone.
My mother was one of the most gifted people on Gatara. Even on the council! Gatara formed in the mid 2000's. 2058, I want to say? A new continent just popped out of the ocean one day. Well, more like after 2058 years (and then some) of slowly rising until the earthquake which brought down the sea levels and formed: Gatara. Gatara saved the Earth's population, and jump started the Evo.
They were once known as a deficiency. Now, they are the only means of survival.
Everyone shifted out towards the enormous mass that was Gatara. It was a paradise. The soil was rich, the trees lush. Freshwater flow was everywhere. The economy was saved and the over population problem was no more.
And thus became the Evo.
My temper shot through the roof. I punched the mirror without second thought.
"SHIT!" I yelled out, clutching my bleeding hand. It's not that it hurt, but that's the fourth mirror I've broken this year. It's February. Mom's gonna kill me-
Mom.
One of the council leaders that has up and vanished. My mother who was too ashamed to stay by my side just like my father who left when I was sixteen, just two years ago.
At least she stayed longer than he did.
I look back at the crumbled note. I wash my hand off in the sink and grab a towel on the ring on the side. I look in the cracked mirror and glare at myself.
'The hell are you lookin' at?'
I turn and walk out the bathroom, the room undisturbed. I have no siblings, I was supposed to be enough. My father was also on the council before he divorced my mother. Well, not divorce, but he packed up and ran like a speeder. He resigned from the council and no one has heard from him since. No one will, either.
He's a tracker. Naturally, if you could track anybody on the planet no matter where in less than an hour, you'd know how to do the opposite. His gift works through seeing the person. If he sees a picture of somebody, he automatically gets a vision of where they are, and how they got there. Of course, there are holes, but this is different for each tracker.
My mother is a time traveller. This is actually common, but most can only go back only an hour or so, or maybe freeze time. No, my mother could go forward in time and go backwards. No matter how far. Though, she can only hold it for an hour or so, like the other time travellers.
And me? I'm the accident. Not in the sense that I wasn't planned, no, I was planned alright. Everyone was ecstatic for my birth. I was the accident when I became the only one on the planet to not be gifted.
What load of bull is that?
