Chapter One:
Today is May 14th, 3034. Today is a year since my mother left me with a note that I read everyday, two years since my father left me.I have gone through life with no gift, and no problem. I'm a senior in, and school ends March 16th. I'm 18 now, giftless, and top of my class nonetheless. I have a job, which is a miracle. Jobs revolve around gifts, everyone has one. My job is to manage account at the bank, but even that requires the gift of math. I barely slide by with my calculator and constant scribbles on sheets to keep up.
I tried the doctors visits, they tried everything. They were completely stumped on why I didn't have a gift. It should be genetically impossible. No one else has my disability. My eyes remain their magical color and my hair is natural lilac shade. I look like I have a gift, and it is unknown to everyone besides the doctors, and teachers, that I don't have one.
If people found out, I'd be done for.
It's common courtesy to not tell your gift until you're applying for jobs. This prevents bullying. Crime rate is at it's minimum.
This works to my advantage in full.
I was walking down the hallway carefully. Analyzing every movement, it's amazing what you can learn when you keep your mouth shut. I haven't had a real conversation with anybody since Mom left. It'll stay that way too. My temper is more controlled now. It had to be, it brought too much attention. The doctors gave me pills that would calm me down greatly. I threw them back in their face saying, 'I can do it my own damn self, thank you.' They didn't look surprised.
"Hey, Kaia!" I heard a voice yell. Sammy.
"Hello," I said in a low voice, not intending to speak another word; he knew this. Sammy came to walk beside me with a huge, bright grin on his face. My temper sparked defiantly.
What do you have to be happy about?
Sammy had absolutely gorgeous red, almost orange hair. His eyes were a violent shade of yellow. Sammy was a Sundia, we like to call them. They're painfully obvious to spot. So bright that they light up a room. Most commonly confused with Flammers, due to looks, but the personalities couldn't be any different. Sammy has never told me outright, but he didn't need too. They effect personalities instead of physical harm. It's irritating to be upset then be incredibly happy the next moment.
Sammy, for some reason, has always been beside me. I've never had a real conversation with him except to ask him why he wouldn't leave me alone. That conversation didn't go well.
Sammy sat by me at the lunch table for the sixth time since Mom left. Which is everyday. He's never even paid attention to me before, what's his freaking deal, huh?
"Hey, Kaia!" He said brightly.
"Hello... Danny?" I said getting his name wrong on purpose.
"Sammy, actually, silly goose." He said, his ego not hurt in the slightest. I groaned internally.
Fine, I'll just ignore him, I thought defiantly.
"So, whatcha readin'?"
"Psychological Advances," I replied shortly.
"That's so cool! Explain it to me sometime?" He was absolutely beaming. My temper couldn't handle it. I purposely seperated myself from my friends, who had no problem with that, might I add, and this kid has never even looked at me. What's the deal?
"What's your deal, kid?" I said, glaring.
"What do you mean?" He asked, confused. He was fidgeting slightly, feeling my anger. He could feel my emotions, I knew that much. Sundia's are cheaters when it comes to having relationships. They can feel everything the other is feeling.
"You know I'm not going to date you. In fact, I don't want shit to do with you. So, with that being said, do me a favor and leave." That's all boys ever want isn't it? Always hoping to find "love". What bull.
He knew I was being ridiculous. Who gets mad at somebody who's trying to help them go through a hard time? He knows I am. I know that he knows, and yet, I'm pushing him away to deal with it alone. To prove something.
"I didn't plan to date you," He began with a slight frown, his bright demeanor dimming. "I can feel how sad you are. I just want to help."
"I don't need your-"
"I know you don't, but wouldn't it be nice to have the option?" He smiled at me, and my mood shifted. My anger left me. I never questioned his actions again.
Sammy tried to make conversation as we made our way through the crowded walls. I didn't speak a word, but this didn't bother him. We made our way to class, his schedule almost identical to mine, and sat down. Sammy started humming a beautiful tone, and I put my head down and proceeded to listen to everybody making their way into the classroom.
Nothing special, as usual, until I picked up on a certain conversation that made my blood run cold.
"I heard that she doesn't have a gift. How's that even possible?" A girl with a low pitched voice said to her friend, I assume.
"I heard that too!" Her friend whisper yelled. "But that's crazy. I know she's always quiet, but she has colored eyes and everything."
"They could be contacts," The first girl replied, the word 'contact' unfamilliar on her lips.
"Con...tacts? What on Gatara are those?"
"We just learned about them in World History, Jan."
"You're hilarious if you think I listen."
Then they continued some meaningless conversation about why she should listen, forgetting about the giftless girl they just talked about. I had no doubt they meant me. I stiffened. Just a few more days and I'm done.
Who's been spreading stuff like that, anyways? What're they gaining? I have no enemies, no, I'm not important enough for that. Everybody knows about my parents leaving, but no one says anything. And that was a year ago!
My face was starting to heat up, I could feel the outburst on it's way up my throat. Surely, I can yell just this one time, right? We're almost done and then my job can be full time. I'm so close.
But not close enough to slack off.
I took a deep breath and put the rumor into 'deal with later'. I went on with my day with no incident and no mention of 'giftless' again. I was fine until I bumped into somebody in the hallway, the moment that changed my life now that I look back on it.
"Oh, c'mon, man," A high pitched voice said. A girl? I kept my head down, not planning to apologise, but she didn't seem angry.
"Ah-" I spat out. "I'm sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going." I looked up at the girl, met her eyes, and my breath was taken away from me. She was gorgeous. She had long, violet purple hair that ran down her shoulders in waves. Her eyes were the same color, her skin as pale as can be, but even though she was dark she glowed brighter than any Sundia I've met. I was at a loss for words. This must be her gift.
"You're completely fine! Thing's happen. Oh hey, you're the giftless girl aren't you?"
Oh, you've gotta be kidding me.
