June 21st, 1995.
"On the night of the summer solstice the curse will be broken. Diana, you sure as hell know we can't stop it", whispered Katherine's mom, standing still as a stone over her daughter's tiny bed.
Her aunt looked tired, hopeless even, as she replied: "Then why did you accept? You are a selfish human."
Elizabeth closed her eyes, as if that was going to stop bad memories from drowning her. They came to her in tidal waves. At night. While she was driving. Teaching at school. While waking up.
It was impossible to escape.
In a voice slightly below a murmur, Elizabeth tried to defend herself: "Sister, what was I supposed to do? Let him kill me? I love my daughter to pieces, but I have a life too."
"Shut up!", Diana stood up from the chair. "There were other ways. We could have searched, asked Demetrius, call somebody..."
"There is nobody to call. And nothing to undo. It is what it is.", Katherine's mum added lifelessly. "All that is left is to hide everything from her and hope she never meets that man."
"But what if she does?", Diana cried out in protest, almost waking up the tiny girl. Kate, as they liked to call her, shuffled for a bit in her bed, unaware of what the future was holding for her.
"If she does, a tragedy will strike. And I don't know who will end up alive."
