“If there be light, then there is darkness;
If cold, heat;
If height, depth;
If solid, fluid;
If hard, soft;
If rough, smooth;
If calm, tempest;
If prosperity, adversity;
If life, death.”

Prologue

My feet hurt from running but I had no choice, I couldn’t stop. He was still chasing me, trying to capture me for his leader. His thoughts were open because he was human and had no way of blocking off my ability to read them. His horrible heart was swayed by the power of a Exterminatore man’s ability to control him. I turned around and did a round-kick into his face, making him crumple to the ground. It wasn’t the first person I had killed.
Why was he chasing me, you ask? Well, that’s easy. I’m Mentem Lectori and I’m related to the most powerful mind reader in all history. Of course, I didn’t know that at the time and neither did she. I was lost out in the world, able to be captured, and she was hidden behind walls of steel that were impenetrable. Neither of us knew about each other, but it wouldn’t be long before we did.

“What?” My heart fluttered in my chest and I dropped the basket of pens I had been holding.
No, no, no! First the thing with Bridget and now this is happening?
I put my hands over my face so that the kids wouldn’t see me start to cry. I wiped at my eyes and turned to Caelia, my Caretaking partner. She nodded her head and I mouthed a silent ‘thank you’ to her.
When we were out in the hall, Jay gave me a big hug. I was so incredibly torn apart right then. I felt like my whole world was being shredded to pieces. My life had always sucked, but as soon as it had started to get better it seemed to have been destroyed again. My sister, Bridget, had been in a coma for two months now and I refused to believe that she wouldn’t wake up. She would, I knew it in my heart.
“Come on, we have to find her,” Jay begged. He was right, and I was being selfish. I chased after him out of the Care Center and to the Center Forces building. The military base was at the Center, a city that was, currently, the only safe place for those of us who were going extinct.
Jay led me through the halls to where his parents were sitting with Anthony, the head of Center Forces. They were flipping through all of the security footages that they could find. Jay ran up to his mom, Livana, and gave her a hug.
Livana Bridgewater was the sweetest person that I knew. She fully devoted herself to her patients at the Infirmary and her family. Seeing her cry as Jay embraced her made my heart break even more. When she saw me I went and I tried to comfort her. What must it have felt like for her to find out that her youngest child was kidnapped?
Bella wasn’t even a full year old yet. She had just started trying to crawl and sit up by herself. Sometimes when I fed her when I watched her she would try to talk and she would make cute baby noises. When they found the person who stole Bella I would make sure that person regretted it for the rest of their short life.
