I grasped the silver, shiny, polished rail of the glossy wooden ship, Evelyn Ivy. Leaning over I watched the clear, glisting ocean waves over, over, over again. And my slender dark shadow moves its head. Watching, waiting to see the shore. There it was! Finally, our island. Our very own private island. It looked phenomenally beautiful above the surrounding grey fog. I brushed my hair back, revealing my dazzling bright blue eyes. I expected the atmosphere to be excited and anticipating. But instead, it was silent, everyone around me was wondering why... Why had this island been sold for only five dollars?
I remember the day I realised we were moving here. It was five weeks after my father lost his job. We were homeless and living on the busy streets of Berlin. We only had ten dollars between us. But then, our dream came true! On the wall there was a poster it stated, "Five dollars and a free voyage for the island of your dream." We grasped the opportunity as quickly as we could, and that was the reason why we were here about to set up our new home on a deserted but gorgeous island. 'Nicole.' My mother's voice knocked me out of my daydream, 'Darling, were going onto the island get ready.'
This island was all I had wished for. But, I had an uneasy feeling that something about this island wasn't right. I grabbed the few possessions that we hadn't sold while we were living on the street. Walking off the boat I looked around the island. My heart pounded against my chest and I moved closer to my Mother. Suddenly, I realised someone was missing. Where was my Father? Then I heard it. 'I took him.' Shaking, I looked around. 'Hello, is anyone there?' 'Yes.' The voice replied. I looked around again. My Mother looked over at me 'Darling, who are you talking to?' I shrug, and keep on walking.
'How come she can't hear you?' I ask when I make it to the house. 'How has she not even noticed my Father is gone?' I heard the voice again. It was deep and gravely but at the same time it was soft and quiet. 'She is too caught up in herself to realise he is gone. Anyway, don't you want to know who I am?' 'Yes.' I reply curiously. 'My name is depression.' The voice continues. 'This island is isolated and everyone who lives here hasn't had a utopian life. So, I take them and they become mine. Would you like to be mine?' The voice echoed eerily in the wooden house bouncing off the fragile, flimsy walls.
My hands tremble and I run outside. 'Father?' I scream at the top of my lungs. 'He's not here.' Depression says. 'I told you I took him. You don't need him. He's mine now.' 'No!' I shriek, as tears fall down my face. 'I want him back. now!' Depression answers slowly, sadly, 'OK then I will show you go into your Mothers room.' I walk back to the house determinedly and into my Mothers room. She's still sitting on her bed but she doesn't seem to notice I am here. Next to her is my Father. Sitting. Motionless. Staring. Still. Silently at the wall. I start to shout 'Father.' Depression interrupts my shrill cry's. 'If you get him back that means I have to leave you.' Depression says. Despite Depressions voice, I continue to shout. 'I love you, Father. Don't let Depression get to you. Just forget this ever happened.' Suddenly, as if mist has broken off him I see him smile. My Mother turns around and hugs me. 'Darling, where were you?' She asks. Just like that everything that has happened has been forgotten and we are now a happy family and Depression has gone away. Forever... I hope.
