What My Boss Taught Me

My boss taught me the concept of focus. He says: Focus. Focus. Focus. He says focus on what you want to achieve, and you will achieve it.

.

Life is all about relationships. I have discovered that our interactions in life have a way of ultimately shaping and affecting our lives. Just like any other person, I have had my fair share of interactions with people. One of such is my interaction with my bosses. Good or bad we have these experiences to share.

.

My boss wants to use me to achieve his objectives and that makes him a good manager. He achieves his goals through other people and I happen to be one of them. He explains that once you put your mind to a task, and focus on it, you are most likely to realize that objective. He believes that if the human mind can think of something, then it can be done.

.

I agree with him.

.

Focusing on a goal, helps us avoid distractions, and continually reminds us of what is important and what is not. It is usually common to miss the point and get distracted by situations and circumstances around us.

.

However, I have observed that being focused does not mean being one track-minded. You can achieve several task objectives within a specific time frame.

.

To me focus means identifying the options available and selecting and then working on the best to enable myself to achieve an objective. The focus is on the objective, and not necessarily on the means of achieving the objective. The means can change, due to changes in the environment, but the objective remains the same.

.

Let's focus on the things that matter.

.

My boss also taught me the concept of decision. He explained that the position I occupy today is a reflection of the quality of the decisions I had made in my life before now. Decision or decision-making is a powerful tool you can use to define yourself. Take advantage of this tool to make the difference positively and achieve your goals.

.

In addition to the above, my boss also taught me the concept of aggressiveness. He explained that aggressiveness is the drive or push to get things done despite all odds - the expression of physical or emotional energy targeted at achieving desired goals.

.

I have learnt from my boss that this is a defining factor in achieving results in a competitive environment. Think of the survival of the fittest. Think of targets or deadlines. Think of expectations from self and others and indeed stakeholders. Think of success. To survive and excel you need to push. You may need to push your vision, your ideas, your products and your strategies. You need to overcome obstacles. Sometimes you have to overcome yourself.
