I wanted to go to Mariah's going away party so bad! Why is my mom so selfish and Make me stay home? Mariah is my best friend. I can't believe she's doing this to me.
"Aria?" I heard a knock on my door, it was my dad.
"Come in.." I grumbled.
He opened the door and gave me, what looks like a fake smile. "I know how much you want to go to Mariah's party. I understand how hard it is to lose someone you love, my best friend moved away when I was 14 and I was the same way as you. It hurts. I know."
"Exactly. So why can't I go?" I crossed my arms.
"Well how about I take you there but we tell your mom I'm bringing you to the library." He smiled cheaply.
"Yeah, like she's gonna believe that." I smirked. "You always say that."
He shrugged. "It works sometimes."
I stood up. "I guess it's worth a try."
"That's my girl." I laughed, I love my dad.
We went down stairs and my mom was in her office. Perfect. We grabbed our winter coats and our boots because it was snowing, and quietly opened the garage door. We got into the car and left. Mariah's party is at the gym in the Y, and that's all the way across town. I pulled out my phone, it said 8:27, the party starts at 8:30. I text Mariah to tell her I was going to be a little late, which is so unlike me.
About 9 minutes later we finally arrived at the Y. I thanked my dad and quickly got out if the car and to the door, the snow really picked up on the way here. I went to the desk to find a lady in her early 20's smiling at me. "How may I help you?" she asked more cheery than I'd expect from her.
"Um, I'm looking for Mariah's party, I was told it was in the gym."
"Oh yes, the gym is just down there." She said pointing to a hallway across the room.
"Thank you." I said as I hurried away.
Down the hall there were large doors that had purple and pink balloons on them, Mariah's favorite. I ran through them to find a huge group of kids from our school. Some I didn't even think knew Mariah. I tried to search the crowd of people but being my short self, it wasn't much help. Then I spotted Katie at the snack bar. I ran over to her.
"Hey! I was afraid you wouldn't make it." Katie said pulling me into a hug.
"Ya sorry, at first my mom wouldn't let me go, but my dad brought me anyway." I said yelling over the music.
"Your dad is awesome."
"I know right." I looked around then turned back to Katie. "Have you seen Mariah?"
"Last time I saw her she was over here," she said looking around too. "But then by the time I got here she was gone."
"Oh, ok." I said bummed. "So why are there so many people here?"
"I have no idea, I thought it was supposed to be a few friends, not the whole school." She gestured to the big crowd.
"Same here." I said putting a pretzel in my mouth.
"Found her!" Katie screamed pulling in my arm toward a group of people, then soon I saw her too.
"Mariah!" I yelled. Mariah looked around, saw me and ran towards me, we hugged.
"Hey I got your text," she said pulling back. "Why were you late?
"My mom." She shook her head, that's all I had to say and understood. Just then my phone rang. It was my dad. "Hello?"
"Hey sweetie, your mom told me to pick you up from the 'library' because there's a blizzard coming." My dad told me over the phone. "I'm outside, sorry."
"UGHHHH!" I said hanging up. "Mariah, my dad's outside. My mom told him to pick me up because there's a blizzard coming. I have to go."
"But you just got here!" She complained.
"I know, I'm sorry, blame my mom, or Mother Nature." I hugged her. "Have a fun rest if the night."
She slightly smiled. "Thanks, I'll see you tomorrow right?"
Of course!" I said shocked. "No way am I letting you move without a goodbye."
"Ok, see you tomorrow." She said.
"Okay!" I yell as I walk away.
I walked through the gym doors and all of a sudden it felt really quiet since I wasn't getting music blasted in my ear anymore. I ran to the coat rack to grab my coat and ran quickly outside and into the car. The snow got even worse since I was outside last. I cold barely see the building and we were right in front of it.
"Sorry," My dad said backing up. "I tried to convince her to let you stay, but you know her."
"It's fine.." I sighed. Then the rest if the car ride was silent.
Until.
There was a red light, that we could barely see by the way, and my dad slammed on the brakes but there must if been ice on the road and this green truck was coming and slammed into the driver's side and glass shattered everywhere. Pain shot through my arm and I looked down and I had a cut along my forearm. I looked at my dad and he looked worse. I quickly grabbed my phone and called 911.
Soon I heard sirens and what felt like an hour, but was probably only a few minutes, the ambulance showed up and got the driver's side door open and grabbed my dad and put him in a gurney. I got out and followed them but there was a guy that pulled me away and wrapped up my arm, and them got me in the ambulance that showed up a minute after the first. I was fighting but they were stronger than me.
"Where is my dad?!" I screamed, then started crying. "I want my daddy!"
"You'll see him at the hospital. You're fine, just stoop fighting us. You're not supposed to put pressure on that arm." The guy that pulled me away from my dad said.
I glared at him but listened. I stopped fighting and say down. Then I started crying and I couldn't stop.
A little while later we got to the hospital. After the doctors and nurses stitched up my arm they told me to sit in the waiting room until they let me see my dad. In about 10 minutes they came and asked me if I'm ready to see him, which I thought was a stupid question. Without answering them I stood up and followed the nurse. She opened a door and I saw my dad passed out on a bed. I ran over to him and sat on my knees next to his bed.
I grabbed his hand and cried. I felt it twitch so I looked up at him and his eyes opened and he looked at me and smiled. To see him smiling at a time like this I couldn't help but to smile back at him. Then my smile quickly faded as his eyes closed and the machine started beebing. The nurses and doctors ran in the door and told me to wait in the waiting room until my mom came.
And that was the last time I saw him alive.
