Chapter 1
Our tale enters upon a ramshackle cottage which is not fit for mortal life. The roof is no more, offering no safety from the elements save for a cloth sheet fastened over a single spot for some shade. The building is scorched, as if a battle was waged and the cabin caught in the crossfire. The fields around to either side of a small dirt path leading out to a forest have fallen into ruination, weeds now overwhelm the previous farming land. The sun beats down mercilessly while no wind blows for even the slightest reprieve from the heat. Inside there is a voice, hushed ever so softly, singing a sweet song. A young girl wearing a journe gown and wimple sits in an old chair under the shade with her eyes closed and head tilted back while she sings. Next to her on a bed of hay covered by linen cloth lies a boy in the plain clothes of a commoner. The color is drained from his face, he appears ill, pale, and not well. Awakening, the boy looks up to the girl.
"Uh, hello?" The boy asked quizzically, a confused look strewn across his face. The girl simply replied in kind, "Hello." "Is uh, what, where am I, who are ---? " Sitting up quickly the boy recoiled in pain, lieing back down. He lifted up his clothing to find his ribs and left leg bandaged as intense agony shot through him again. "In order? You've been injured, you're at a farm, and I've been the one nursing you." She quaintly smiled, leaning forward to check on his health. "You're pretty beat up, you shouldn't push yourself now." "Nghugg" He grunted in pain, unable to articulate words. "Really, just lie still and you wont hurt as much. I don't know what you had gotten yourself into, but it must be serious. Your friend has been worried about you." She placed her hand on top of his to comfort him. "It is good you are finally awake now, I can properly introduce myself. Hi, I'm Sky." He stared blankly at her radiant face, unable to coerce the confusion inside his own head into an audible sentence.
Laying his head back he brought his hand from his ribs before his face, and stared at that hand silently for a few moments to focus, and gather his thoughts. "Yes, yes my friend, I remember something. Everything in my head feels fuzzy right now. Is Richard okay?" She gave a quick smirk at this, and proceeded to respond, "Richard, so that's it huh? Well that makes a lot more sense then. Yes he is fine. A lot better off than you I should say." "It doesn't take much to be better off than me right now it seems." He mumbled in a self-deprecating manner. "Sky you said your name was, yes?" "Yes that's right, I was beginning to think you had forgotten already. What is yours? The healer should get to know her healee." A grimace flashed on the boy's face now. Visually upset at the very notion of what this girl asked of him.
"What use have I for a name? I couldn't even do anything to..." He started to trail off as he began to look around the room he was in now. "I'm at a farm? But there's nothing here!" He was right of course. Inside the cottage was bare, there were no furnishings except for the chair which the girl sat on and nothing of apparent value to speak of. It looked as thought it had been abandoned. "Everyone needs a name, a designation, something to be called. Perhaps, something to be called by a lover?" She snickered away as a bright shade of crimson returned to the boy's face. "Yeah well, grrr, it doesn't matter anyways, you don't need to call me anything girl." The two became still once again and the air was tinged with an awkward silence. He used this time to reflect on the girl he has just met, her kindness in having cared for him, her angelic voice as she spoke and sang, her beautiful face, and looking into her eyes was as if he was out under the bright blue sky. He had to tear himself away from looking into her eyes too long, for therein a crystal clear brilliance gazed unto him which he felt pierced his very being.
