Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash were gathered at Sugarcube Corner for lunch.
"So darlings, I must know. What are you all wearing for the dance?" Rarity asked, with a sparkle in her eye.
"Well shoot, I nearly forgot about the dance." Applejack responded. "I'll just wear my dress from last years shindig."
Rarity gasped. "Oh no no no my darling! You can't! You simply must wear something new!" She said, before gasping again. "I have a fabulous idea! Why don't we all go shopping for the dance?!"
All the girls smiled and nodded. All except Rainbow Dash, who was busy staring off into space as she twirled an apple on her finger.
"Uh... Rainbow Dash? Rainbow Dash. Rainbow Dash!"
"Huh?! What?! What is it?" Rainbow Dash exclaimed, her apple falling to the floor. The girls stared at her. Applejack chuckled.
" Well SOMEONES head is in the clouds. Whatcha thinking about?"
"Uh... just about the game on Saturday. Yep." She said with a forced smile.
Applejack raised an eyebrow. "Uh-huh... well anyways, while you were off in la la land, Rarity here had the grand idea to go shopping for the dance. You in?"
Rainbows face was blank. "Um.. what dance?"
Rarity's mouth flew open. "What do you mean what dance? We are talking about prom! You know, the biggest night of our lives?" Rainbow's face remained the same. Rarity face palmed herself. "I swear Rainbow Dash you can be so thick headed!"
Rainbow Dash shrugged and took a bite of her apple. "I guess I'm in. Won't have much time though. The games on Saturday and I still have a whole lot of practicing to do."
"Oh that's right! You have your ball game thingy that night too! How is that going?" Rarity asked.
"Pretty good I guess. My first practice was... well let's just say it could've gone better. I was feeling pretty down about it actually. But Soarin gave me a little pep talk and I remembered how awesome I am. So it's all good"
Rarity exchanged a look with the rest of the girls. "Oh? Soarin sure is something isn't he?"
"Yeah he-" she started to say before catching onto Rarity's tone. "-s okay I guess. I don't really talk to him that much." She finished, looking away.
"Oh reallllyyyyy? You didn't seem that way when he saved Scootaloo from Pokey. You were staring at him like this!" Pinkie said, pushing her eyes open and drooling a little.
Rainbow shook her head vigorously. "I was not! Soarin is just a guy on my team. A friend. That's. It." She replied, turning the slightest bit red.
"Okay Rainbow. We believe you," Fluttershy said quietly, smiling. The girls nodded and went back to discussing the dance.
Rainbow sighed inwardly. The girls may have believed her, but did she believe herself?
————————————————————————
It was the end of school. Time for practice. Rainbow Dash finished changing, and ran out to the field to greet her team.
"Dash! Good thing you're here. We need you and Soarin to go get more Soccer balls from the storage closet." Spitfire asked, in a commanding voice.
"What? Why me?" The two players asked confusingly.
"Because you two are the most late. Now get going. Here's the keys." Spitfire said, handing Soarin the keys and ushering them off.
Rainbow Dash sighed. "Come on Soarin"
She said, leaving the field and entering the school. Soarin sighed as well, and proceeded to follow her. They walked past the front desk, waving hello to Principle Celestia, and then crossed the dimly lit hallway.
"Hand me the keys" Rainbow Dash said as they approached the small storage closet. Soarin rolled his eyes, but did as she asked.
She opened the door and went inside, barely fitting. "How many do you think we need?"
"Uh.... how many are in there?" Soarin asked.
"Seven."
"Let's just take all of th-" Before he could finish his sentence, he heard a squeal from across the hallway. He saw Scootaloo, Apple Bloom, and Sweetie Bell race towards him on Scootaloos scooter, not aware of his presence.
"Wait! Watch ou-!" He was cut off again as the girls slammed into him, shoving him forward and into the dark closet...right into Rainbow Dash. The door slammed shut, locking the two in.
"What the- Soarin, what the heck just happened?!" Rainbow asked, unaware that she was sitting on top of him.
"It wasn't my fault! Your sister and her friends hit me!" He paused. "Hey Dash? Could you uh, get off of me?"
Rainbow, now aware of where she was, turned bright red. Lucky, it was too dark for Soarin to see that. "Shoot uh-" She said, trying to move off him. She was finding difficulty in doing so. The closet was so small! The only other position that would work is if they stood.
"Let's stand. I think that's the only position we can do that isn't... you know. Weird"
Soarin nodded, then upon realizing Rainbow Dash couldn't see his nod, said "okay. Let's try it." He grabbed her hands, and pulled up her and himself. 'Great,' he thought. 'Now we're in a even worse position!'
Soarin was right. Him and Rainbow Dash were now pressed up against one another, his arms around her waist. She coughed awkwardly, not knowing what to do.
"Scootaloo? Apple Bloom? Sweetie Bell? Are you guys out there?" He called, praying for a response.
"Yeah we are! Don't worry, we'll go get help!" They heard what sounded like Apple Bloom say, before hearing them all race off.
It was quiet for a moment, before he heard a shudder come from the girl he was still holding. She seemed to be...shaking?
"Hey Dash are you alright?"He asked softly.
"Uh huh! Wh-why wouldn't I be? It's not like I'm afraid of enclosed spaces or anything" she replied, her voice shaking. "Nope not me! I'm totally brave 100% of the time. Yep.."
"Dash, it's okay to be afraid. It's a totally natural thing! I'm afraid sometimes too"
"Well I'm not! I told you I'm fine." She replied, voice still quaking.
"Okay Dash..." He said, letting go of her waist.
"Wait! Just... just don't let go. Okay?" She said quietly, moving in closer to him.
Soarin didn't respond. How could he? The girl that he had liked for like 7 years was now in his arms. Literally. He didn't know what to do except hold onto her, feeling her heart beat against his.
They stayed in this position for about five minuets, before Soarin broke the silence. "Hey Dash... can I ask you something?"
     "Sure?"
Soarin paused, and took a breath. "Do you... do you want to-"
"Got it!" Soarin heard a voice yell outside the door as he was interrupted. It opened and Spitfire stood, arms crossed and eyebrow raised. As Rainbow shoved off of Soarin and ran through the hallway enchanted by her freedom, Spitfire looked at her flushed male friend and smirked. "Geez bro, if you wanted some alone time with Dash you should've just asked"
Soarin didn't respond. He just looked from Spitfire to Rainbow Dash and groaned in his hands. He was utterly embarrassed. Why? He didn't exactly know. Sure that situation was awkward but at the same time it felt... normal? Comfortable? He didn't know how to explain it. It just felt right. He sighed.
Spitfire caught onto his sad look and patted his shoulder. "It'll be okay Soarin. I promise."
She wasn't exactly sure what "it" was, but she hoped her words would help out her brother.
Soarin shook his head, and almost fully recovered, smiled. "Yeah. Anyways, it's time to practice! I'm dying for a nice run." He looked over to Rainbow Dash, who was staring at the wall peacefully but still breathing heavily. "Let's go Dash!" He called out, turning. He would have to talk to her later.
