A handsome devil

"It was all true." The words came out of Chloe's mouth in a soft gasp as she stared at Lucifer in his real form.

"Detective?" He enquired, surprised at the look of shock written all over her face. It couldn't be just because Pierce was laying dead on the floor, stabbed by a demon-forged blade. "What?"

"Your face," Chloe managed to whisper, unable to rip her eyes away. She stared at every ridge, every new contour of his alter. The confusing thing was that it still sounded like Lucifer, the man she knew, entrusted her life to, fallen in love with.

"I did tell you," he said softly, realizing she was seeing the part of himself that he'd kept hidden, afraid of her rejection. "Detective," he caught himself, "Chloe," he paused, "This is all of me. I really am the devil. I've never lied to you." His voice was soft, silken. "I need to take Cain down to hell. Make sure he's securely locked away."

They could hear sirens fast approaching, called in by Dan and Ella.

Chloe stood, rooted to the spot, frozen as she took in every detail of his red skin and terrifying features. It was strange, but she didn't feel afraid, she'd never been afraid of Lucifer, even when he'd displayed his temper, or freaky strength. He was, in reality, her safe place.

"I need to go. I'll be back," he told her as he picked Cain's body up rather roughly. She gasped as his battered, bloody wings unfurled. "Say something," he begged as he stood before her.

"Your wings?" She stuttered.

"Stopped the bullets," he butted in. "They'll recover. I just need to know that you're ok before I go."

"I'm ok," she said. It wasn't true and they both knew it, but with the sirens directly outside, there was no time. Lucifer gave one last small, sad smile and in the blink of an eye, disappeared, leaving just Cain's earthly body and a pile of bloodied feathers in his wake.

In many ways, it was a relief to see Dan and the guys from the precinct as they burst in, expecting to see Chloe and Lucifer dead, killed in a trap set by their boss. Dan rushed over to hug her.

"You're as white as a sheet. What happened?" He asked as he noticed that she was shaking almost uncontrollably. Shock was setting in. "Where's Lucifer?" He's spotted Pierce's body on the floor with a knife sticking out of the chest.

"I..I don't know," she admitted. "It all happened so fast. There were so many of them. I don't even know who killed who."

"It doesn't matter. All that matters is that you're ok," he said as he noticed the sheer number of dead bodies laying on the floor, reinforcing his opinion that Chloe was seriously badass.

After the guys assured them that they'd cope with the cleanup, she let Dan take her home, still mute, ideas racing around her head. Did she see what she thought she had? Chloe began to doubt her own eyes. His assertion that his wings had protected her from the hail of bullets made sense, but how would she explain that to everyone else? How would she explain his disappearance? Questions just begat more questions. It was safer to keep quiet and concentrate on hugging Trixie, who was doing her schoolwork with the sitter when they got back to the house. The sheer normality of the scene making Chloe doubt herself even more.

"Maybe I got hit on the head?" She mused out loud.

"You need to go to the emergency room?" Dan asked. "Does it hurt?"

She shook her head.

The next day, after a sleepless night, Chloe drove over to Lux, mainly to see if Lucifer was there. She had so many questions, needed so many answers. Even if Lucifer wasn't there, she reasoned, she could speak to Amanediel or Maze.

It was empty. Nothing had been moved, his bed hadn't been slept in. This time though, there was no evidence that he wasn't coming back, no sheets covering the furnishings. Even his clothes were still hanging in neat rows of Prada suits in his dressing room. She walked in further, her eyes drawn to the pile of black bags in the corner. They seemed out of place, too carelessly placed in the immaculate surroundings. Gingerly she opened one and peered inside.

Feathers. It was full of white feathers. As she touched them, she felt the ridge they were still attached to. She pulled until an entire wing was in her hand.

She dropped it, her hand flying up to her mouth as the horror of it being attached to a piece of flesh became apparent.

"Maze has been cutting them off every day."

A voice made her spin around. Lucifer stood in the doorway, looking, well, like Lucifer. His human face firmly back on. "You came back," she said.

"Yes, well, once I'd delivered Cain to hell, and made sure he was fully settled in, there was nothing to keep me there, no pressing matters to attend to," he said, never taking his eyes off her, "so I came back to make sure you were ok. I'm sure you have a few questions to ask me, but first, I need to know....are you afraid of me now? Only I saw your face when I was in devil form and you didn't look impressed, despite me being a rather handsome devil."

"I'm not afraid of you," Chloe admitted, "I could never be afraid of you. You saved my life."

He smiled at her. "I think you'll find that it was actually you who saved me," he said as he led her out into the great room and poured them each a glass of amber liquid.

"It's a bit early for alcohol, besides I need to go into work. There's gonna be a shed-load of fallout from yesterday to deal with, plus we need to find out who our new boss will be."

"I'm sure Dan will cover the report-writing, it's what he does best," Lucifer pointed out. "You had a shock yesterday. People will forgive you for taking some time off."

"Does anyone else know? You know, that you're really the devil. What I mean is, has anyone else seen your red face?"

"My devil-face? Apart from Amenediel and Maze, only Dr Linda. She was shocked and repulsed too if I recall correctly. Sat shaking for hours and refused to sleep with me again."

Chloe took a gulp of her liquor. "She knows and never said?"

Lucifer nodded. "She knows the whole story, understands immortality. She even stayed friends with Maze knowing that she's a demon forged in the bowels of hell. It's quite funny really."

"Maze is actually a demon? What does that mean? And why did you let her live with me and Trixie?" The questions were coming thick and fast.

"Oh yes, she has no soul, which is the mark of a demon. She was a torturer back home, my most talented one. I brought her here for a bit of fun, a holiday if you like." What he hadn't told her was the discovery he'd made while down in hell, that with no Maze to keep control of the inmates, the two worst serial killers in history had escaped and nobody had any idea where they'd gone. In truth, he'd returned to make sure they weren't on earth. "Maze wouldn't hurt you or your offspring. She likes you."

"Amenediel?"

"An angel, a proper one which makes him as boring as hell. He's currently in the silver city, showing Charlotte around and sucking up to dad
