Ten years later, I thought about Jessica and thought to myself, 'Maybe I should call Jessica to see how she's been'. So I picked up the phone but stopped.
I don't know Jessica's number now. Could Jessica be at her parents so I could call there and she would pick up the phone and answer? Well, I tried anyways.
Someone answered but it didn't sound like Jessica or Jessica's dad. It said, "Hello." I had to think a little bit. Who else would answer?
Then I finally said, "Hi. Would you happen to know a Jessica Feeney? Is she available?"
"Who is this? Jessica moved out two years ago." Then it clicked. It was Jessica's mom.
"It's me, Tom. Jessica's friend."
"Oh. Tom. Yes, now I remember you. I never heard you talk." That's why I didn't recognize her voice. "So you want to talk to Jessica?"
"Yeah."
"Sorry she's not here right now. She's.... Well I don't know where she is right now. I could give you her phone number."
"Okay." She told me her number. "Okay. Thanks."
"No problem."
So then I hung up and tried the number. She answered.
"Hello."
"Hi Jessica."
"Who am I speaking to?"
"Tom."
"Oh! Hello Tom. It's been a while."
"Yes it has. What are you doing today?"
"Um... Nothing. Why do you ask?"
"I want to see you again. You can come over to my house or I can come to yours."
"I'll come to yours because mine is a horrible black hole." I laughed.
"So is mine."
"Okay. So what's your address?"
I told her my address. "Got that?"
"Yeah. Bye. See you in about a hour or two."
"Okay. Bye." I hung up.
Then I heard a knock at the door. It couldn't be Jessica. She said she would be here in a hour or two. So I went to answer the door. It was Jeff. I opened the door.
"Hey Jeff."
"Hi." I looked at his burnt body.
"Wow! Poor you. Now you feel stupid for being mean to Jessica don't you?
"It noticeable?"
"Yes. It's so easy to see your burns because you can't hide your face."
"I know."
"So why did you come to my house?"
"No one wants me in their house."
"Probably because you're a jerk," I whispered so he wouldn't hear me.
"What?"
"Nothing. So your going to stay here?"
"Can I?"
"Sure, but J-" he interrupted me.
"Thank you! You're the best."
We sat on the couch and talked. I forgot all about Jessica coming. Then I remember that it was my girlfriends birthday.
"Oh man! it's already 2! I have to go Jeff! Don't wreck anything!"
"Wait! What are you- " I left before I heard him finish.
30 minutes later Jessica came. I wasn't home but Jeff told me the whole story.
Jeff was listening to music and he heard a knock at the door. It was Jessica. Jeff opened the door.
"Oh. Is this your house?"
"No. It's Toms."
"I thought so. So where is Tom?"
"He ran out about 30 minutes ago. I don't know where he went."
"Oh." She was quiet for a bit. "Who are you?"
"Jeff. Don't you recognize my fa... Nevermind."
"What happened?"
"I was at a bonfire. I stood up and someone pushed me. I fell into the fire."
