I was sitting in my closet. The normal routine. Going through pictures of me and Dylan, crying for hours. Then suddenly I heard a knock on the door. I went to the door to see who was there. I opened the door and saw a tall guy. He told me his name was Shawn. He had brown hair, grey eyes. He asked if he could come in and I let him in.
" Hi. Are you Brenda Levin?" He asked.
" Brenda Smith now. But my husband died a year back so yes. How do you know my name?" I replied.
" I was sent here by your sister. She said that you were depressed and needed someone to talk to so I volunteered. My name is Shawn Matthews." He replied.
Omg. I can't believe I didn't recognize him. Then suddenly all the memories came rushing to me. He was my best friend in middle school. I was so happy. He had moved at the end of middle school and nobody had heard anything about him since. There had been a rumor going around that he died but I never believed that. Everything started to make sense.
"Why did she send you?" I asked."Why didn't she just come herself?"
"Well she couldn't afford the flight so she called me and sent me your address and now I'm here". He replied awkwardly.
"Well ok. Ummm... Would you like to come in?" I asked him.
"Sure. If its ok with you". He replied stepping into the door.
I could see by the look on his face that it must have smelled pretty bad in there. I quickly ran to the other room and opened the window and let the room air out a little.
"So... How has your break from college been?" He asked, trying to start a conversation to end the awkwardness.
"How did you know I was in college?" I asked, wondering how much he knew about me.
"Your sister told me. It's cool that you are going to the same college as me". He said, seeming less awkward.
WE HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE SAME FREAKING COLLEGE AND I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE HIM!!!
I tried to sound calm as i spoke again." Yea. That is cool. What are you studying?" I asked, feeling less awkward. I felt like everything was becoming like it was before he left in middle school. We used to have conversations just like this all the time. I missed those days. Well things change and we have to be ready to accept that. So I was now talking to someone who I haven't talked to in years like it had been no more than a few days since I had seen them. It was all kinda weird. But now the person who I had been so close to, and then disappeared, was here. In my house. Talking to me.
" I actually have to go because I am meeting a few friends but... would it be ok if I come back tomorrow?" He said, looking at me hopefully.
" Sure. That would be cool. But maybe do you want to go somewhere like the park? It's really nice." I replied nervously. I hope he doesn't get the idea that I'm asking him on a date.
" Sure. That would be fun." He replied. " See you tomorrow." Then he left.
