chapter 2

as hook and emma walked behind eeva and i, we trudged through the frozen grass. i knew something was up. something was just different ... something had changed. as we reached the crest of the forest, eeva stopped in her tracks. she sat down on a heavy, large root. "hey guys," she said. "i don't feel well. i'm just going to stay behind today, okay?" i looked back at emma and hook, who were then looking at each other. hook turned to eeva and said, "aye lass," to which emma followed up with, "stay put kiddo. we'll be back before sunset." at that point, i just ignored my suspicions. i thought to myself, "maybe eeva actually doesn't feel good," or "you're just being paranoid," but somewhere deep in the midst of my mind, i knew eeva was fine. by that point, i wasn't sure what she was getting at, or why she didn't want to be around us. so i just kept on walking, into the forest of neverland on the quietest day there is. i heard a kind of screech that made me whip my head around. it was distant, but i could still hear it. "did you guys hear that?" i asked hook and emma, who were walking amongst the trees, grasping each other's hands. "no ella," emma said, slightly turning her head to look back at me. so i just decided it was a bird. as i turned back around from hearing the "bird", i tripped on a rock and broke the skin that shielded my knees and my right palm. hook stopped and released his grip on emma's hand. he turned his face to meet my bloody knees and hand. he leaned down to where i'd rested on a tree stump, and wrapped my knees and palm in grass that is supposed to have healing properties within it's roots. emma, however, did not notice my fall, and kept walking. hook extended his hand and we stood, continuing to walk on, trying to catch up with emma. as we were walking a sort of speed-walk, we heard slowly-approaching foot steps behind us. i swiveled on my heel, jolting around to see what lay behind us. it was a child, no older than 13 years. he was standing about 3 feet away from us, his knit beanie shaking nervously on his head. i took a step closer. "hey, no need to be concerned," i said, holding out my non-injured hand, as a sign of safety, a sign that he wasn't going to get hurt. he turned his face slightly to the side, avoiding eye contact. "what's your name?" i asked. he looked up, nearly meeting my line of sight, but not quite. "polar," he said. "my name is polar." hook kneeled to become level with my height. "well, polar, are you lost?" hook questioned. "not exactly ..." he replied. he lightly swept a glance over me, and honestly, i felt quite violated. "so, you're running away?" hook asked. "chasing something? why are you out here on this day?" he questioned. "i'm ... looking for something. someone, actually," he states. "who?" i asked. he looked at me with this intense glare, than said, "it's really none of your concern." hook and i exchanged glances as polar peered off into the distance. i broke my stare with hook and looked straight into the boy's eyes, and for the first time yet, he looked straight into mine. "accompany us," i said. hook looked at me and said, "excuse me, miss, but you can't invite rude little children to run amuck with us." i rolled my eyes and continued to look at polar. "come on. we'll help you find who ever needs finding," i said. i heard emma scream somewhere in the distance, and apparently, hook did too. hook jumped to his feet and ran as quickly as he could through the dense forest, followed by me and polar. we reached emma, to see her standing face to face with a shadow. the dark one's shadow.

we bursted from the forest with such force it could be considered frightening. eeva stood near by, with a young woman standing close behind her. eeva kept repeating the phrase "what's wrong?" until i reached out for eeva's hand and held it in mine. i looked straight into her eyes and said, "we're in trouble. we found the dark one's shadow."
