When I looked over at Claire I could tell she was worried. Joey was all she had left, well except Tim (her dad) and I but it's not the same Joeys all she has left of her mom. Claire's leg was bouncing up and down and she's biting her nails, she always does that when she's nervous. The doctor who walked through the door was wearing a white lab coat, looked about twenty-five, had short brown hair and was wearing dark blue denim jeans. He searched through the faces of the people who were sitting in the small waiting room, when his eyes finally reached Claire he cleared his throat and said,
“Ms.Small your brother would like to see you and your boyfriend.” I could feel myself blush, did this idiot really just say that? Claire just glanced at me and giggled a little, I'm glad she found that amusing.
“He's not my boyfriend.” she told the doctor, gosh I feel loved. The doctor laughed,
“Yeah and I'm the Queen of England,” I could sense the sarcasm “Follow me please.” He turned and walked through the large metal double doors that lead to Joey. Claire's face turned as white as a sheet and she did not look ready to go anywhere. For some reason sense the first day I meant her in third day I felt like it was up to me to take care of her, protect her. This was one of those times. I stood up and wiped my sweaty palms on my lap. I was nervous, why was I nervous she's been my best friend sense fourth grade. I told myself to forget it, this isn't about me it's about Claire not passing out.
I walked over to her, she was beautiful she had long golden hair that curled in random directions that would have looked stupid on anyone else but on her it looked cute, and had green eyes that sparkled. I walked over to her and took her hand and lifted her up.
“Come on, think about Joey he probably is feeling so lonely.” after I told her that she nodded and we walked through the double doors together.
When we walked in the small room that was covered in baby animal wall paper and had equipment laying everywhere we found little Joey lying in a hospital bed with his brown mop of hair lying on a spider man pillow. I could see his eyes light up as we walked through the door. He sat up in the bed with a sling over his neck holding his broken arm up. Claire walked over and sat at the end of the bed. I felt bad for the kid but seeing Claire like this made me want to beat the pulp out of those monkey bars for making Joey look this way and Claire feel this way. Joey smiled at his older sister,
“Ma’am, it's okay I, Mister Indiana Jones, have completed the mission.” Claire laughed a real whole-hearted laugh and very carefully hugged her little brother,
“Thank you Mr. Jones I don't know what I would have done without you.” I could hear from her voice that she was crying but they were happy tears or more like relief tears. I walked over to him and ruffled his hair, I'll give it to the kid he'll be a ladies magnet if he keeps his good looks and personality, I smiled and said.
“Hey kid how ya feelin?” he looked up to meet me with those soft brown eyes.
“I'm feeling good,” he said but I knew he wasn't telling me the whole truth, “Sissy I'm really thirsty will you please go get me a water.” he said now talking to his sister.
“Of course, I'll be right back.” Claire said as she slowly got up and walked out of the room in search of a water fountain or vending machine. Then Joey looked back at me,
“I lied I'm not thirsty but my arm really does hurt... a lot Devin, can you make it go away?” I felt bad for the kid, he did look like he was in pain.
“I'm sorry kid but I'm not magic, you'll have to wait for a doctor to come back in.” I told the small six year old.
“But you are magic 'member when you made that nickle come out of my ear? Just do your magic and make it go away.” Oh gosh now what am I supposed to do, tell a six year old there's no such thing as magic because that would be a great way to ruin a kids childhood in two seconds.
“Okay bud I'm going to tell you something but you have to promise not to tell anyone okay?” he nodded, “Good, I'm not really magic I was just pretending what real magicians do, I can't actually do magic.”
“Oh.” he seemed disappointed I don't know if it was because I couldn't do magic or if it was because I couldn't help with the pain. It's weird, I feel the same way with Claire when it comes to her mom, she may seem tough but really on the inside she's hurt and lonely and for some reason I feel like I need to make it stop but I just don't know how.
“Why didn't you want to tell Claire that your not feeling good?” I asked him trying to some what change the subject.
“Because I have to be her Indiana Jones I can't let her know I don't feel good or it would ruin the mission to make her feel better.” You and me both kid. I swear I would be able to take better care of her than anyone else in the world if it weren't for my stupid step-dad being abusive twenty-four seven. Then Claire walked back in with a bottle of water in her hand, she gave it to Joey and watched him gulp it down. She put a lock of hair behind her ears, she always does that when she's happy. You probably think I sound like a real creep but trust me when you know someone for that long you get to learn some things. Seeing him feel better must be making her feel better, wow she's a great sister.
By the time Tim got to the hospital Claire and Joey had fallen asleep on the hospital bed, with Joey rapped in Claire's arms.
“What did the doctor say?” I asked him, he had talked to the doctor before coming back to see him. Tim was a nice guy, I had known him sense I was nine when Claire and I first started hanging out. He tried hard to get through to Claire but he wasn't having any luck. Honestly he tried to hard, she had seen over five psychiatrist and doctors and none of the had helped.
“He'll be as good as new in five weeks. He fractured his humerus but will be fine. He's getting his cast in three days, the only reason we're still here is because there getting all the appointments around and having him rest up before sending him home.” He said smiling. The man was a lawyer, no wonder Claire lived in a mansion. “Speaking of still being here, why are you still here? Not that I don't want you to be but he'll be fine?” I laughed at this because to be honest, I don't know why I was still here. We've been here for three hours and Claire and Joey are asleep, why am I still here?
“I don't know I guess I just felt like he's my little brother too.” That was the best answer I could come up with. Tim just nodded and we went back to silence.
