Rain pounded down outside the window and thunder clapped so loudly that the woman could hardly hear her own thoughts. The strength of the storm had made all power in the house go out long ago, so a moist chill filled the room. All of these things along with the violent worry of a wife without her husband set the woman on edge more than she had ever been before.

Would her Love ever return?

Had something bad happened to keep him from coming home?

Would she have to raise their newborn child without the help of her husband?

All of these thoughts haunted her mind as she watched the storm out the window. It was nearly impossible to see past the porch, which is why the woman did not think much of the shadow she thought she saw lurking in the woods outside. The shadow quickly disappeared from her mind, however, when she heard the sound of her child crying in a room nearby.

The woman rushed to the room, picked up the child, and rocked it until the cries quieted to whimpers. Then, still holding the child, she returned to her post looking out the window. The storm was becoming more violent, and the claps of thunder frightened the child into another fit of screaming.

Cursing under her breath, the woman moved away from the window and shushed the child once more. While she was still trying to comfort her baby, the front door slammed open and a figure dashed in from the storm. The woman was so startled that she screamed and set the child on the deep-cushioned couch next to her. After placing a blanket over the child to hide it, she then went to close the door and began searching for whatever had entered her house. It wasn’t long before she found what she was looking for.

The figure was a ghastly sight, hunched and covered in cracked, scaly skin that was a sickly shade of white. Its eyes, however, where the most frightening of all. They were a glowing, ugly yellow and seemed to destroy the woman’s ability to form coherent thoughts. While the woman stood, dumbstruck, in the doorway of the kitchen, the creature before her selected a knife from the block and stalked towards her.

It wasn’t until the knife had been plunged into her throat that the woman realized what was happening, and tried to scream for help. The knife still in the woman’s throat, the creature left the room and went to the front room of the house. Almost to the door, a waft of scent made the creature stop dead.

Someone was coming.

The creature suddenly melted into the shadows in the room, lurking as an intangible ghost of itself. A man then opened the door and blew into the house, quickly closing the door behind him and shaking himself to get rid of some of the rain that clung to his curly brown hair. Then he felt it. There was a feeling of danger and fear clinging to the air, thick as the smell of blood that lingered as well. The man tensed and his thick muscle strained beneath his drenched black shirt. His hands clenched into fists as he searched the house. There were only two rooms left and he had found nothing out of place. But he had also heard nothing from the family he was supposed to have waiting for him.

When he came to the living room, he found his newborn child laying—wide awake but completely silent—on the couch beneath the blanket. He stooped down to pick up his baby and took the child back to the nursery, placing it in the crib before continuing his search of the house. Only one room was left; the kitchen. As he approached the doorway the smell of blood grew stronger, and a very quiet sound came to the man’s attention. The sound was the faint gasping of one who has no chance of surviving but tries anyway.

The man entered the kitchen and found her. His wife was laying on the ground curled into herself with a pool of her blood around her. Her eyes were wide but unseeing, and her breathing was heavy but dying with each passing moment. The man fell to his knees and began to call for her. When she did not even react, he began to cry. That’s when he saw the knife protruding from her throat. He tensed again and immediately became silent. The feeling of danger invaded his senses and he stood to look around. Just as he turned, he saw the creature. It was the last thing he saw as it dug another knife into his spine and left the room.

The creature moved through the house, searching for the thing it had come for. A soft creaking sound, however, pulled it back to the kitchen, where the woman had finally found the strength to pull herself towards the man. The creature ignored the woman and continued its search. Finally, it found what it was looking for. It picked up the child as though it were a mother and carried the bundle to the front door. After a short pause, the creature emerged from the house into the suddenly calm and silent night.
