What? What exactly did he mean? I thought this as I re-read chapter 12 in the Indian Chaturanga. I had already read the entire textbook prior to this unannounced guest's speech.
"Mony! Mony!" I rolled my eyes. It was Cara Wilkonson, the daughter of Jeffrey Wilkonson, Mayor of the New Colony. The richest girl in the school, had money for books, food, the best tutors and yet she still found herself clawing at me to do her next assignment.
"Mony!!!" Cara yelled and stopped abruptly at my table. I glared at her but she didn't pay attention to that.
"Mony, what does Indian chata.. tur.. turn...ga, well whatever you call it, mean?"
I sighed calmly and spoke, "Indian Chaturanga is an ancient strategy game. It's a common ancestor of old board games like chess, shogi, makruk, xiangqi and janggi." She looked more confused then ever, she just shook her head and held up a little piece of paper in front of my face.
"Professor Clarkson is going to extend the due date for the next chapter of History because I haven't completed the assignments, so I have to do this big project on Indian Chat... Whatever... And I need you to do it for me." She said in her annoyingly long, run-on sentence."This paper explains the requirements."
I slowly took the piece of paper. Then I shook my head.
"Cara, this is worth your entire grade, and if we get caught then we would be expelled."
Being expelled was the number one worst thing that could happen to a student. Not only would you recieve the upmost punishment, but then you would be removed from the academy and your family would stop recieving checks from the government. It was basically either the academy or death.
"Oh come on Mony you don't seriously believe that, you're one of the highest ranked students in this school and my father is the richest man in the New Colony, funding this school." She whispered harshly.
It was true, her father was the leading sponser for this school, donating thousands of dollars every month. But that protected her, not me. Being a higher educated student wouldn't stop the academy from expelling me.
"No Cara, I cannot risk it." I handed the slip back before she could say anything else. I took my textbook and made my way out of the Red Room. But I didn't get far enough before hearing Cara whisper,
"Pawns are always at risk."
