~ PART ONE                                                                                                                                             - the beginning

The floor was cold and hard as I layed there bloody and bruised. My head pulsed making my vision blur in and out. I felt as if the room was spinning and standing completely still all at once. My whole body was vibrating with pain, usually I can take her beatings but today it was ten times worse, today's my birthday. The day that ruined her life, the day her family disowned her, the day her highschool sweetheart turned his back and pretended not to know who she was, the day that a picture perfect 16 year old life all came crashing down leaving nothing but me. A disgusting, useless, needy child that can't do anything for herself.

I squinted as I tried to get of the concrete floor of my room. It barely had anything in it, a torn up sleeping bag and old stained yellow pillow that's slowly losing its stuffing sits in the far corner. The little bit of light streamed in from the bared off window well with the hole in the screen. I stood and hobbled over to the window as a friendly squirrel stuffy hopped through the small hole.

I giggled with excitement, "Hello! You're a pretty stuffy."

It was a light brown burlap except its tummy which was a snowy white burlap. It's eyes where a dark brown buttons that shimmered in the little amount of sunlight. I squeezed my small arms through two bars and grabbed him tightly so he couldn't squirm away.

"It's okay Mr. Squirrel you don't have to be shy," I said to him as I slipped him through the bars.

I laughed proudly and hugged Mr. Squirrel tightly.

"Now I have a friend," I whispered.

And with that I softly held Mr. Squirrels head quickly and harshly twisting it. I heard a crackling snap as I did it and felt a popping feeling go through my hand. Within a blink the once stuffy turned into a real squirrel with matted and dirt filled fur and sharp front teeth. It's body was limp in the little girls hands.

"Now you're a real squirrel and we can play!"

Just then I heard the stomping of feet, I gasp and quickly scurry to my bed.

"You gotta hide, if she finds you she'll be mad!" I said stuffing him into the sleeping bag.

"What are you doing you stupid girl," she barked in drunken slerse.

"Nothin', mama," I said meekly.

"Nothin mama, nothin mama," she mocked, "I don't want to be your mama, you wretched thing. You ruined everything, I had people that loved me. A family that loved me. The perfect boyfriend just like the ones in the movies. Then you! You ripped that all away from me!"

Suddenly a stinging strike hit the side of my face and I fell to the floor. My mother stormed away drunk and teary eyed.
