The giant yellow octopus that stood in the front of a large group of children in, what looked like, school clothes. Everyone was looking around, confused. Some were touching their chests or heads as if feeling for wounds.
"As you all probably noticed," a tall man with dark hair, smoothed back, wearing a plain suit said, walking out of the shadows, "you died. However, this isn't an afterlife."
"Karasuma-san, let me explain this." The yellow octopus said, a seemingly permanent smile etched on the strange creature's face.
"That is strictly against protocol." The first, Karasuma, responded. "You all died very young, and none of you had good lives. You were all assassins. Now it's time to make things right. You're going to be protectors of this world.
"You're going to be put through through training, to be trained to be able to better handle situations that caused your death, because after you graduate, you will no longer have the protection of your teacher. I recommend you all take this seriously.
"You must protect this creature, because you can't die unless he does, in which case, you all do and are judged on whether you go to the good place or the bad place. I suggest you try to get along." He said, before vanishing.
"Wait... What?" A girl sitting next to Nagisa with green hair (Nagisa could have sworn he had seen her before) asked after a moment of awkward silence.
Then the, now class, erupted into noise, everyone yelling questions on top of each other. Nagisa couldn't handle the noise and put his hands over his ears, curling himself into a ball.
Karma seemed to notice Nagisa's struggle, as Nagisa soon realised that he had warm arms wrapped around him, arms he recognised as his boyfriend's.
"They're not yelling at you, they won't hurt you. I promise." Karma said, only loud enough for Nagisa to hear, not the others.
Karma had failed to protect Nagisa in the alleyway, but he was never going to let that happen again. He had sworn to protect the smaller since he found him surrounded by the dead 'caregivers' who had tortured him.
Eventually the giant yellow octopus got everyone to quiet down. "Everyone back to your seats." It said, looking pointedly at Karma who instead of going to his own seat swiftly sat on Nagisa's, putting the smaller boy on his lap.
"What do we even call you?" The green haired girl asked, not seeming impressed with the smiling yellow thing in front of them.
"Good question, Kayano Kaede, I don't have a name yet. It's up to you all to name me." It said, rubbing two of its tentacles together.
"Well... We're not able to kill you... How about Koro-Sensei?" A boy sitting at the front of the class with dark hair who looked very attractive suggested.
"Sounds good to me. Everyone call me Koro-Sensei." The giant octopus announced.
"Yo, Koro-Sensei, what exactly is the point of this weird school like environment?" Karma asked, holding a now calm Nagisa on his lap.
"As you were all assassins, most of you missed most of your school lives. We're protecting the world, and training to do so. The rest of the time, we're going to be having normal schools." Koro-Sensei explained.
Most of the class let out a groan, but some of the people, including Karma and Nagisa, looked confused, never actually having gone to a real school before.
"So, now it's time for us to start class." Koro-Sensei said, turning to the blackboard behind it.
Nagisa and Karma completely zoned out, it seemed like most of the class had done that. This was obvious because when Koro-Sensei asked a question, everyone was silent, you could practically hear crickets, except they were silent too.
"Karma... Karma... KARMA!" Koro-Sensei started getting angry as he noticed that nobody had been listening to him.
"What..?" Karma asked, annoyed as he had been in the middle of sketching Nagisa the way the smaller boy always wanted to be.
"Which of these sentences are grammatically correct?" Koro-Sensei asked, pointing at 4 different sentences.
"I dunno, I don't care. What's the point of school? I can live off killing bad guys." Karma said, sounding bored.
"Tut tut tut, Akabane Karma, the value of education isn't just in the amount you make, it's about knowing more than you could alone. Education is the culmination of the knowledge of so many people from all times and all over the world." Koro-Sensei said, but all he received was bored looks and yawns.
Suddenly there was a loud gurgling growl from the green haired girl's stomach, soon followed by a quieter gurgle from Nagisa's.
"Fine. Everyone go outside, it's time for lunch." Koro-Sensei said, sighing in disappointment. It was obvious that he genuinely believed that education was unbelievably important.
"Where do we get food? We don't have any money or food with us." A girl with long hair tied back in a ponytail and a fringe that stopped at her eyebrows asked.
"Of course. There are lockers which is where you will change and store all of your things. You will get a lunch in there every day. They are separated by gender due to changing there as well." Koro-Sensei explained.
Nagisa and Karma jolted to attention at this. Separated by gender... Born or present?
You see, Nagisa was born as a girl, which is why he had been abused so much when they were little. The 'caregivers' at their orphanage were incredibly homophobic and transphobic, constantly beating Nagisa to try to make him a girl.
Karma was treated poorly as well, but they would usually stop when he passed out, often hitting him in places where it couldn't be seen and he would be out in one or two hits, Nagisa's torture was relentless.
After their first few kills, they managed to get enough money to give Nagisa the surgery, so now he's physically male as well, but some people would still insist he's female.
They both walked to the mens' side, breathing a sigh of relief when they saw Nagisa's locker right next to Karma's. They both grabbed their lunches and went outside.
They sat under a tree, sharing their lunches. It tasted a little funny, but it was something neither of them had ever eaten before, so they shrugged it off.
After they had eaten a group of people wearing the same as Karasuma had been, only with ominous a opaque masks on surrounded them. The two boys jumped up, but something was wrong.
Their limbs felt heavy, and Nagisa had barely stood before he collapsed into Karma. Realising that he stood no chance, especially with a boyfriend to protect, Karma tried to run, only to stumble and ultimately be surrounded.
