Chapter 1 - You Promised

"River, get down here. It's seven-thirty."

I groaned and lifted my head off the pillow to look at the digital alarm beside my bed. '7:10' flashed on the screen. I knew it. He always lied about the time, so I woke up early, but it's a Saturday, I don't need to do anything other than my morning chores.

"Boo, breakfast is ready if you want any. And if you do, you better get here before your brother, and I eat it all."

"I'll be down in a sec" I yell, my voice sounding raspy.

I throw my covers off my bed and step into my slippers. I stand up, rubbing my eyes and walk to my mirror groggily. I look ahead and see the dark circles surrounding my eyes. The mirror explains how I feel this morning, like a sack of stones are loaded on my shoulders.

I turn towards my closet and grab a few items of clothing, a plain black and white striped shirt and a pair of baggy blue jeans. I feel my hair and decide against having a shower this morning seeing as I had one late last night.

I quickly change, tucking my shirt loosely into my pants. I tie my hair into two tight plaits and grab one of my clips to smooth down the bumps.

I rush down the stairs, into the kitchen, to find my father and brother eating on the island. I sprint to the bench, hoping to find some food left only to find a plate assorted with breakfast goods.

I pick up the plate filled with bacon, eggs, onion and mashed potato and stroll to the island. I sit next to my father and start to listen in on the conversation.

"—get the pen done out back to swap the chickens into, after breakfast." My father informs my brother, Justin. Deciding not to listen to their boring conversation, I take my plate to sit on the verandah that overlooks our farm.

I sit and eat in the brisk wind and watch as the sun gradually rises through the horizon. I see my horses Pluto and Gumball canter around in their paddocks, chasing the birds.

Biscuit, my dog, pokes her head between my legs, looking as cute as ever, whimpering for a piece of my bacon.

"Hey girl, you want some, don't ya" I coo, cutting a small piece of my last slice of bacon for her.

"Here girl, sit" she does as I command and she jumps as I throw the piece of bacon, "Good girl." I pat her on the head before walking back inside to put my finished plate in the kitchen sink.

I want to see Pluto, but as I have chores, my dad will get mad if he sees me go. He and my brother seem as though they have finished breakfast, as their plates are in the sink.

I kneel onto the countertops to reach the top cupboards, as unfortunately, I never got my fathers height. I throw open the cabinet and grab a few of the sugar cubes that my dad has hidden in a jar, he thinks he's sneaky about his 'hidden spot', but I figured this out a long time ago.

With the sugar cubes in hand, I step back out onto the porch to scout out my father or brother. I remember them speaking about doing the chicken coop, so I decide that is where they are. I walk towards the shed to hear two voices speaking behind it. They're definitely behind there. So now all I have to do is get to the stable without them seeing me.

"Dad, go get the other bloody battery for the drill, the damn thing died on me again."

"Oh shit, darn, crap." I quickly jump behind one of the wood stacks and hold my breath, chucking the sugar cubes in my pocket. I hear footsteps on the concrete and press myself further into the wood. Moving causes the stack to fall over entirely.
